The Subway Sandwich Deception
We are all aware of Jared's incredible transformation from "blimptom" to normalcy by eating Subway sandwiches and the resulting "Eat Fresh" slogan that put Subway on the top of the map.

Being a vegan, I only ate a foot-long Veggie, no mayo or cheese, with mustard and some oil and vinegar, on toasted whole wheat. When they offered avocado I got a bit skeptical because when Quiznos added avocado it was a paste and not what I had hoped.

So, one day at my local Subway, I asked the woman behind the counter if the avocado was fresh. Her reply, and I really appreciated her honesty despite her lack of marketing skills, was, "Yes, we opened the can this morning."

That got me to thinking, "what else?"

I have come to learn that every one of their "6 grams or less" items contains preservatives to keep it, if you will pardon the expression, "fresh."

Okay, they make the sandwich in front of you, but behind the scenes they get boxes of already cut up and pre-packaged processed foods, with chemical additives, that are shipped from Big Food factories to all their locations.

Did you know that the 9-grain whole wheat bread that looks and smells freshly baked contains around 50 ingredients including refined flour, conditioners, MSG, refined sugar and more? Me either! How can a bread so processed ever come close to being a real food?

Did you ever hear of a chemical ingredient called azodicarbonamide? Me either. It's banned as a food additive in the U.K., Europe, and Australia. But not at Subway. Interestingly enough, if you get caught using it in Singapore you get up to 15 years in prison and a fine of $450,000.

All restuarants do this......advertise as "fresh" but its convenience food really.....after the recent horsemeat thingy here in UK , I ve stopped my son having school meals......
Things have changed , I truly believe the best way to eat out is to take food with you if you are to be out of the house at mealtimes....I just take a sandwich and a banana for me and my boy if we are going to miss lunch.....fish and chips here in UK is about the only thing thats on my agenda as an OK to eat if we get caught short....

t was a sensible post, i read it twice happily.
if you dont grow it yourself, and eat it, dont be surprised if you find out it is tampered with.
The global food crisis (people being unable to account for their own/local community crops) has not gone to waste on big chemical companies,
they take the opportunitie to poison as many as possible, also future generations.

Did you know they use sulfites to preserve their produce? I have a reaction to that stuff that causes my throat to swell up any time I eat at Subway. So I avoid them like the plague!

Re: The Subway Sandwich Deception
It seems rather obvious, IMHO, that their "food" is anything but fresh.

Take their "meat" for instance: The meat is 100% processed. They receive their "meat" in a giant cube or oval shaped blob which is then sliced. Real meat just doesn't come naturally shaped in a giant oval blob. This stuff is basically on the same par as pre-packaged individually wrapped "cheese" slices, other wise known as "processed cheese food product".

There is nothing fresh or natural about it. The "meat food product" is simply a blended slurry of meat stuff (god only knows what) mixed with tons of sodium, preservatives, chemicals and likely "meat glues". The result of this mix is them shaped into some type of cube or blob, plastic wrapped and shipped to the stores.

The same hold for almost all of their other "food products".

The lettuce is pre-cut and arrives in plastic bags that are ready to open. Surly their are a lot of additives into the produce to preserve the appearance of "freshness". Likely color additives as well to enhance to appearance.

The dough is likely also pre-mixed and shipped in bags which can then be baked. I suspect the pre-mixed dough comes in a wet form in plastic bags although it is possible that it comes in a pre-mixed dry form, in plastic bags, which is then mixed with one of those big dough mixing machines after adding water. I have never worked at subway so I'm not certain of the procedure they use, but I would be fairly certain that is from one of these two methods.

The only things I could see being cut in store would be perhaps the tomatoes and possibly be onions, cucumbers and green peppers. However, it is likely that even the onions and green peppers are also pre-sliced, arriving to the store in plastic bags that have been modified by preservatives, color enhancing agents and other chemicals.

I suspect the tomatoes and cucumbers are actually cut in house but its highly doubtful that they are organic. Most likely they are GMO "foods".

The olives, banana peppers and pickles are obviously canned and obtained from mass production suppliers such as PYA.

So fresh is not exactly what I consider when thinking about Subway..... pre-packaged food stuff delivered from mass producing suppliers, arriving in large cardboard boxes containing numerous plastic bags which are then opened behind the scenes and dumped into the trays used to display them at the front of the store in the sandwich prep station.

So again: Fresh - NO; Natural - Negative

The illusion of freshness should be their true slogan if there were really any truth in advertising

Re: The Subway Sandwich Deception
"Fresh" does not mean "Natural"...under any circumstances. Subway has never offered "Natural" food...just fresh. Although much of the items they offer have sat there all day...on display...to show how "fresh" they are.

In other news...

Granulated "sugar" is beet sugar UNLESS it is actually labelled as "Cane Sugar". This goes for ingredients on labels, too. If the ingredients list says "sugar"...you can be assured it is NOT cane sugar. If it contains cane sugar it must specify "cane sugar". But not beet sugar. Beet sugar is just "sugar".

White chips are NOT white chocolate chips, regardless of being packaged by a prestigious chocolate company and being sold surrounded by all sorts of "chocolate chip" varieties. It is merely what it says - "White Chips"...made from corn syrup. White Chocolate is only white chocolate if it actually is labelled "White Chocolate".

We recently discovered "Bright & Early" ...what one would think was cheap orange juice...right alongside the real orange juices. Fascinated...we read the ingredients...Pure filtered water, sweeteners (high fructose corn syrup, sugar), less than 2% of: citric acid (provides tartness), potassium citrate (regulates tartness), modified cornstarch, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), natural and artificial flavors, yellow #6, yellow #5.

And I'm still completely baffled as to why they are suddenly talking about adding sugar/sweetener to milk...WTF??? I have never seen any type of sweetener listed as an ingredient on milk. What is up with that?

For those of you that did not know this, welcome to the club. Just because they have additives does not mean they are bad for you. Without additives, and perservs spoiling is quick if kept at room temp. Do you have any idea how much of our food is imported or shipped state to state? Wake up a bit, fresh food is only locally grown food. You have to import what you cant grow. Check your local farmers market to see what is grown in the region. Some things require a certain climate.

I believe subway is a rip off today. I remember the days when they stuffed the sandwiches but JJ is even worse. They put on about 20 cents in vegetables, literally counting pickle slices and tomatoes then begrudge you with the meat and sauce and wince when you want more sauce to cover up the tasteless meat. Then the sandwich isn't even a foot. You pay $6.00 for a 75 cent sandwich. ARG

Actually your foot long sammy is probably now at least a foot long. About two weeks ago when I was there, I jokingly asked the girl piling all the veggies on the two or three slices of actual meat in my sandwich if they were measuring the roll now. She laughed and said they actually were told to measure them.

Actually, the additives affect me quite severely, so that statement isn't too factual.
And yes, I do shop locally and make most of my own meals because there are additives in most restaurant foods, especially salad bars. I've found a few places that don't use it that I patronize, but I've learned the hard way that this stuff is in damn near everything I buy that's ready to eat.
