Question for Brits: What's the difference between a 'Chav' and a Wigga or white trash?

They all mean the same thing..

I use them as a gauge... Whenever I see them in numbers, time to move

there should be a word for black canadians who try to sound like ghetto black americans. years ago, i went to a hip hop performance which seemed FULL of Americans -- at first i thought every jamaican in town had their cousins from brooklyn visiting -- then (when one guy answered a security guard with an accent just like mine and went back to talking to his friends with an accent just like Flava Flav's) I realized they were all putting on their accents. hilarious!

"Wigga" - is a white person immersed in black ghetto culture reflected in their image.

"Chav" - is a seemingly poverty stricken person (usually white), usually poorly educated and this is reflected in their image which consists of low end high street branded clothing and a general "look" that people associate with those on council estates.

Chavs are more orange.

We have 'chavs' in the U.S. There are tons of them in my city. We just call them white trash. They act and dress very similar to 'chavs'. Like the 2 [censored B-word] I see every time I go into a local store, every time talking about their day in court trying to get the latest restraining order. Normal, matter of fact tones, the way other people would talk about the weather or something. No shame, no embarrassment. And the guys spend spend 24/7 wearing their baseball cap and hoodie up covering their face. I think they sleep wearing their hoodie.

Chavs are called "Neds" in Scotland.

Public or, social housing that usually takes up a whole ( american slang) 'hood'. The housing is paid for by the tax payer.

The word 'Chav' is originally derived from a Gypsy/Romany word (Chavi) and means 'child'. No idea why we adopted it to describe the trackie bottomed, Burberry crowd though. First time I heard the word was at a fairground in the 70's when a Carnie, who was around 15 yr old, asked my cousin if she did Chavs!!!

It was rumoured to be an acronym for Council House And Violent.
