The word 'Chav' is originally derived from a Gypsy/Romany word (Chavi) and means 'child'. No idea why we adopted it to describe the trackie bottomed, Burberry crowd though. First time I heard the word was at a fairground in the 70's when a Carnie, who was around 15 yr old, asked my cousin if she did Chavs!!!  It was rumoured to be an acronym for Council House And Violent.
