Obama, Congress restore horse-slaughter industry

"President Obama last month quietly signed into law a spending bill that restores the American horse-slaughter industry, just a few months after a government investigation said the ban on slaughtering was backfiring.
The domestic ban didn’t end horse slaughter but instead shifted the site of butchery to Mexico and Canada - which meant increased abuse or neglect as the horses were shipped out of the country and beyond the reach of U.S. law.

"For the first time since 2007, someone is actually hoping to slaughter horses for sale. The slaughterhouse facility to last slaughter a horse was in Illinois, but was closed after animal welfare activists threatened widespread public outcry if it remained open.
The USDA issued a statement at the time of the ban’s lift saying there were no U.S. slaughterhouses that butcher horses for human consumption, but that if one were to open, it would conduct inspections to make sure federal laws were being followed.
The man hoping to open his horse slaughterhouse is Rick De Los Santos – a rancher in New Mexico who owns Valley Meat Co. His reasons for wanting to restart the practice are strictly economical. In an interview with the Albuquerque Journal, Los Santos said, “I’m going to try to do what I need to make a living, and that’s not against the law.”
Now that the ban has been lifted, the only step Los Santos is required to take is getting his application approved by the USDA to have his slaughterhouse inspected – at which time he can move forward with the process.
If you’re wondering what kind restaurants in the U.S. would serve horse meat, you’re thinking the wrong country. Los Santos says he plans to sell the horse in Mexico where eating horse meat is no different than eating a chicken leg. But horse is also commonly consumed in Europe, Asia and Canada."
This horse meat, which is consumed worldwide, was probably not originally intended for consumption in the USA, but it seems something might have happened last year that changed that.

"HOUSTON, (Horseback) – Despite claims by pro-horse slaughter activists who would seemingly put a slaughterhouse on every rural main street, the market for American horse meat just dwindled to almost nothing. The European Union released its 2013 regulations for meat imported into the 27 countries.
Under the new regulations, all horses and burros destined for slaughter and export to Europe must have a passport that shows they are free from substances such as phenalbutazone (bute), and clenbuterol. Such substances never leave an animal’s body and are carcinogens. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration bans their use in all food animals.
Almost all U.S. horses have been administered a dose of bute during their lifetime."

"In 2011, about 140,000 American horses were eaten abroad. But they weren’t slaughtered in the U.S. When America closed its last horse slaughter plants five years ago, American horse buyers turned their trucks north and south to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada. From there, most of the meat goes to the European Union.
But American horses are given drugs that humans should not consume..."
Now, call me a conspiracy theorist, but I'm connecting some pretty close dots here. End of 2011, Obama lifts slaughter ban. By the middle of 2012, the main consumer of horse meat, the EU, passes regulations banning the import of any animal meat that contains substances that are found in ALL US HORSE MEAT. No more market for all the meat we just butchered. Bad economy, food supplies in the US are short.
What do we do with all this meat we can't sell to Europe?
Early 2013, numerous allegations rise of horse meat in American food supply, curiously connected to fast food chains, the perfect industry to slip horse meat into, "under the radar".
Now, where do you REALLY think all this horse meat came from, and who is REALLY to blame?
You may be wondering WHY this is such a big deal, WHY we should make a fuss about this, after all, it's just meat, and it can't KILL you, right?
I don't know about you, but if the EU banned the import of horse meat from the US because of all the carcinogenic CRAP we pump our horses full of, CRAP that KILLS HUMANS, that sets off a few alarm bells with me...
