The Messiah Complex and Jerusalem Syndrome
I was perusing through this website, and came across this article. Of course, it reminded me immediately of the dozens of posters on GLP claiming they are the One.

It is fascinating that this research can be compiled and shown, and still the denial of the one/s suffering from Messiah Complex are resolute.

Re: The Messiah Complex and Jerusalem Syndrome
Individuals suffering from messiah complex have run the gamut of nationalities, ethnicities and races.

They tend to be male, as would seem appropriate since Christ was alleged to have been a man. However, on occasion women such as Marina Tsvigun or "Maria Devi Christos" (b. 1960) also have made this claim to be the "son of God," so to speak.

Another female would-be Christ is Lia Eden (b. 1947):
...born as Lia Aminuddin in Makassar, Indonesia. In 1998, she claimed that she met the angel Gabriel several times, convincing her that she was Imam Mahdi or Messiah who brought the prophecy of the world security and justice before the doomsday. In another occasion, she also claimed that she was the reincarnation of Mother Mary and her son, Ahmad Mukti as the reincarnation of Jesus.

Eden was convicted of "blasphemy" in the Muslim country of Indonesia and spent years in prison.

One current "Jesus," Alan John Miller (b. 1962), has a female partner named Rozena, who, "identifies herself as the returned and chic Mary Magdalene."

What is fascinating in the article is it discusses how damaging it can be to the person, as well as to those around them. It especially gets dangerous when they begin convincing people to follow them.

I don't know. I never read the bible.

I just thought it fascinating from an observational point. Not many people get to experience the thoughts of these kind of people like we get to here on GLP. Someone could do an incredible case study just by studying some of the self-proclaimed here on GLP. It is a wealth of information and pattern recognition and symptoms of this psychological 'issue'.

Re: The Messiah Complex and Jerusalem Syndrome
Psychiatrist Carl Jung is credited with first introducing the term "complex" into the psychoanalytic lexicon. Prior to Jung's relatively brief but fruitful collaboration with him, Freud utilized an altogether different terminology to denote the now famous "Oedipus complex." Later, Alfred Adler, another of Freud's former followers, introduced the notion of an "inferiority complex."

According to Jung, a complex (e.g., a mother or father complex) is an unconscious constellation of cognitions, memories, images, impulsions, opinions, beliefs, associations and other content emanating from a core or nucleus of repressed or dissociated emotion, drive or instinct. Complexes can behave like relatively autonomous "splinter personalities," powerfully influencing consciousness, cognition, affect and behavior. As Jung once said, we all have complexes; the question is whether we have complexes or they have us.

Complexes contain archetypal images that lie latent in the unconscious until being somehow stimulated, at which time they can, in certain cases, take complete or partial possession of the personality. The idea and image of Messiah or God appear to be innate (archetypal) potentialities in the human psyche. When activation occurs, some confused individuals misidentify themselves with this archetypal image, resulting in a dangerous form of ego-inflation seen typically in schizophrenic patients, or those suffering from delusional disorder or severe manic episodes.

Re: The Messiah Complex and Jerusalem Syndrome
On a positive note:

We all have a "messiah complex" dwelling deep within. But not everyone becomes completely possessed and grandiosely inflated by it. The desire to redeem and "save the world," when kept in check, can be a very positive force in life, motivating us to do good and to leave the world a better place--if only infinitesimally--than when we came into it. But when one has been chronically frustrated in realizing this positive, creative potentiality, it remains stillborn in the unconscious, dissociated from the personality, rendering them highly susceptible to possession by the messiah complex. This is especially true when the sense of self has been underdeveloped or weakened due to trauma and other early narcissistic wounding.

It is important to understand, in this context, that Jesus did not have any "messiah complex".

In fact, he specifically told his followers NOT to tell anyone that he was the 'messiah'.

Why?

Because that would distract from his Teaching.

He was well-aware that people have a fundamental tendency to focus on the person instead of the Teaching anyway; especially when that Teaching is offensive.

And what happened then?

Christians now worship Jesus as 'God'--something that the Quran characterizes as a "monstrous blasphemy"--while having NO understanding that Jesus taught the Doctrine of "resurrection" as a Doctrine of 'Rebirth'.

Paul, for example, worshiped Jesus as 'God' while specifically contradicting his Teaching on "the resurrection", never having heard OR understood the reply of Jesus to the Sadducees.

It was the church officials & emperors who sought to portray Jesus as the one and only 'God' and thus to create separation and deny the masses from acknowledging their own divine origins & spiritual nature. By creating this separation or illusion, those who held power sought to create an environment where the uninformed masses would exhibit blind trust and complete obedience to the church (and thus the ruling parties) who conveniently presented themselves as the intermediary between the physical flesh and the divine.

No true spiritual leader/guru/master would ever tell you that he/she was more important or more special than any other soul and if you ever come across one who says or implies such a thing, you can be certain that he/she is a charlatan and/or being led by his/her ego an thus deceived and not to be looked upon for guidance or inspiration.

My rule of thumb is never trust anyone who does not view you as being his/her equal. If someone thinks they are better than you then you can be certain they do not have your best interests are heart.
