Exhaust leak sound in the intake manifold...?

You'll have to describe the sound a little better than that. An exhaust leak is a loud rumble. I doubt your intake is doing that unless all the bolts are loose.

dude...... not all of them are loud rumbles.

sounds like exhaust puffing into the intake manifold.. by the egr valve.....

If its sucking then it will whistle more so then puff.

So it's a popping type sound then or is it steady? Does it speed up or go away when you accelerate?

In my experience, a good way to deal with this sort of unidentified noise is to get a 2-3'section of 5/8 - 3/4 heater hose and stick it to your ear to find specifically where the noise is coming from. If it is your EGR, you will be able to hear it. Run the hose near the intake ports on the heads where the manifold connects, run the hose near any vacuum fittings, etc.

THE HOSE KNOWS!

its a steady exhaust sound , and speeds up when its accelerated.

Maybe a intake valve sticking open .. or the egr valve ?

good idea.....

Most people would say its sounds good , but im like an ocd person trying to fix ever little crap thing that bugs me about the car.

If its a real high pitch hissing sound I would replace the ashtray.

If it was an intake valve it would be popping, egr too.

Did you just notice this and is the engine running good other than the sound? Pull out the air filter and start it up without one. The sound of the air rushing in will shock you if you never heard that before. It's loud like a fucking tornado when you rev up a little.

It wouldn't surprise me if it's an old beater and there is some minor little leak at the intake manifold gasket or something. Steady sound of air sucking is not a problem. Popping sounds are a problem. I wouldn't worry if it's not popping.

sounds like a exhaust gasket gone on your exhaust manifold...If you have a catalytic converter on your exhaust its probably plugged....

This is a standard method.

Most exaust leaks make a "shht, shht, shht" sound.

Intake manifold leaks will cause a vacuum leak. If it is significant you'll notice some performance losses.

A tick tick noise from the valve covers is a lifter. In a stock unmessed with engine that means a sticky lifter maybe. In a performance engine it probably means a poorly adjusted rocker arm.

An EGR valve? Fix it if you want to, it won't make much difference either way.

replaced all the exhaust gaskets , donut.. the sound is at the back of the intake manifold... it has a cross over pipe with a wire mesh .. wonder if that cound be it?

Its an exhaust leak.... very small one.

even if its stuck open ? It wont allow exhaust to pour into the intake unregulated?

Ok; I got this tick tack sound now .. it gets worse when i put it in gear.sounds like its in the intake.

Bent pushrod or broken rocket arm on an exhaust valve. Unless it is a motor with tight clearances replace the damaged part and drive on.

check all hoses make sure there are no leaks before anything

The ignited gas cannot escape and when the intake opens the hot gasses ignites the mixture that is coming in and you have a backfire condition each time that intake opens.

Yea, bent pushrod is worth checking out. That's unlikely on a factory engine that hasn't been messed with, but it's worth a shot.

I think it's something much simpler. Exaust leak.

Run the engine with the valve covers off and look at the valve train as it operates. Check your plugs and see if one looks much different than the others.

Sounds like a vacuum leak.

If your egr valve was leaking I would think your RPMs would dip and motor die. Meaning vacuum leak.

Wouldn't hurt to remove it and clean it.

I guess i should have replaced the manifold studs....

That sucks because now ill have to do it all over again.............

But if my cat is clogged would new studs help it.... or would it just blow the gasket out?

did you check the blinker fluid?

I don't think you need to replace the studs. When you pull the manifold off you can tell if it was leaking. There'll be a black spot on the gasket, easy to see...might even be a piece missing.

Do the easy stuff first. Whith the engine running spray some wd40 around the carb base and the intake manifold at the runners. if engine rpm changes then obviously some wd40 found its way into the intake. I doubt you'll find that to be the case, but it is easy. Don't catch the engine on fire.

retighten your manifolds. When the engine is cool fire it up and run your hands very near the manifolds where the gasket is. You can probably feel a leak.

With the valve covers off you can more clearly hear if the noise is coming from your valve train. Watch the rockers as they work. Does one not move much? Spin the pushrods (after you've ran the engine). Do they spin? They should if the valve is closed. about 1 in 3 valves will be closed at any given time, so you'll have to rotate the engine to check all of them.

If you have a IR thermometer (the kind that can get a temp just by being pointed at an object) you can run the engine for a while and then checl the temps of every rocker. Is one hotter than the rest?

And check those plugs. If they all look fairly similar you can rule out any valve problems, though if one is different that doesn't neccisarily mean you have a valve problem.

What is the history of the engine? Has it been worked on lately? Is it new or old?

Your egr valve is dick all. If it was that then you would hear it constantly popping up and down as it struggles to do it's job.

If you want to replace it, grab a socket set and go to the wreckers. They usually go for about $5 if you remove yourself and an easy replace, just undo two bolts and disconnect two lines running into it, they just pull off.

Is it a dodge?

Might be a leak in the plenum gasket if it is. Had to deal with that a few times.

If you've done the head gasket, lots of times plenum gasket is ignored or not even considered, unless your intake plenum pan is one welded unit.

If so you may have a cracked manifold.

Tape some of those pompom plastic strings to a chopstick or something and carefully and slowly move it around engine until you see movement.

If its an Exhaust sound then you need to check the muffler bearing for grease or the nano spitzer spark plug cooler could be faulty.

Exhaust valve seat !

or better yet........... intake valve seat !
