Unixlike User ID: 35144735 United States 03/02/2013 09:55 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think I score a C. I have food, but not a year's worth. I have a plan to produce food, but today I'm not fully equipped to do so. As of today I could keep my family fed for about 4 months. I have two farm implements (a disc and a breaking plow), but no tractor yet. I have land that is suitable for farming....several ideal creek bottom acres. I have canning equipment, but only a few dozen jars. My plan is to link up with my extended family on a 65 acre family land trust. If it gets really bad we can live on that land. There is already a good house and two barns on it, as well as 3 water wells. We're all country people, many with military experience. I feel like we'd do pretty good. As for stockpiling food I have refined a method that works well for my limited budget. I have a core supply of beans, rice, and wheat that is packed for long term storage. It isn't a lot, just 15 gallons worth. I also keep a dozen cans each of cheese and butter. I supplement this with rotating stock of canned and dry goods that I use regularly. I try to keep 10-15 pounds each of corn meal and flour, 30+ cans of meat, 50 or so cans of veggies, 5+ pounds of pasta, 5+ pounds of powdered milk, 5+ pounds of powdered potatoes, and 10 pounds of oatmeal. I know it isn't a lot, but it's the best I can do. My hope is that the supply would last until crops could be harvested, and also that maybe there would still be some food available to buy even if only sporadically or at elevated prices. |

Third world countries are already used to dealing without, not that thats a good thing, but they have coping skills far better than most Americans. This is why i believe that if TSHTF here in the US, people will do things unimaginable, things you didn't see in combat . Anonymous Coward User ID: 5594945 United States 03/02/2013 11:00 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Great thread B&G! It's almost an addiction for me, that every time I cross a store, I have to get a prep! Drives my wife crazy!!! LOL I feel per your test, that I am on the right track. Definitely need better medical supplies. My mother tells me about antibiotics at the pet store, especially for fish, that are basically the same as we humans use? I will look into that more. For all who need to add something to their preps....rolled natural whole oats. If stored properly can last quite a long time and are very very nutritious and filling. I have many pounds and use vacuum bags for many grains and such, for storage. Nutrition and Digestive Health Old-fashioned oatmeal provides many nutrients, including carbohydrate, protein and a small amount of natural fat. Because it contains the oat germ, it is rich in minerals, such as calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. The germ also provides many vitamins, including thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate and vitamin E. Old-fashioned oatmeal also contains oat bran, a rich source of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber becomes a gel when mixed with fluid in your stomach. This gel slows passage of food through your digestive tract, allowing your cells to derive maximum benefit from its nutrients. Soluble fiber also helps make stool soft, keeping you regular and preventing constipation. Cardiovascular Health The soluble fiber in oatmeal helps lower levels of total blood cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, which is the bad cholesterol. When blood LDL is too high, cholesterol tends to build up in arteries, where it contributes to formation of deposits called plaque. As plaque accumulates on artery walls, it narrows the vessels and stiffens them, tending to raise blood pressure and increasing your risk for coronary artery disease and stroke. According to experts at the Mayo Clinic, consuming between 5 and 10 grams of soluble fiber daily decreases both total cholesterol and LDL. A single, 1 1/2-cup serving of cooked oatmeal provides about 6 grams of fiber. Other Benefits Consuming whole-grain foods such as old-fashioned oatmeal also reduces your risk of other diseases, including Type 2 diabetes, according to the Harvard School of Public Health, which also reports that women who consume two to three servings of whole grains daily have a 30 percent reduction in their risk of developing diabetes. Harvard experts also indicate that eating whole grains may lower your risk for colorectal cancer. In addition, in a 17-year study of over 25,000 women, published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" in 2007, researchers found that those who consumed two or more daily servings of whole-grain foods were 30 percent less likely to die from conditions related to inflammation. Some look for a total societal collapse complete with no power and no fuel. Others add epic natural disaster to this as the cause. I am anticipating a very bad economic collapse, but not total. I think there'll still be some people working. Power and fuel will be available at least sometimes. I see crime getting bad, with looting and riots in some places. I see food shortages. There may be rationing. I figure this is by far the most likely "event" in our future. Also, always likely is the possibility for local short to middling term disasters like flooding, quakes, power outages due to weather, etc. Anybody that has done any prepping should be in good shape for such events. With economic collapse my expected event I'm most concerned with the ability to cultivate land. I'm hoping there will be the ability to get a little gas every now and then so I can run a tractor. Otherwise, things will get pretty tough. |
