Rachel Maddow has been using phony twitter accounts to boost her "mentions" on the popular website.

More to the point, either she or the network probably hired a team of people to set that up, rather than Madow doing all that work on her own.
I hate to say it, but in this case...
So what?
It's advertising. Slipped into a format that people think of mainly as... Well, advertizing and spam anymore, with a few witty remarks and pictures of cupcakes people saw in a shop somewhere.
Honestly, I can't see this one as a problem. She was (or her people, with or without her knowledge) were getting her name out there. Is it a lie?
Well, I can't say that I like the underlying morality of that kind of thing, but they don't say "Oh, this totally isn't Rachel Madow saying this" or anything like that, and people can have hirelings and thousands of Twitter accounts if they want, under different names even.
That's provided that it's actually what the man in the article thinks. (I didn't read it. Lazy right now. Frankly I don't think the issue has legs, so can't be bothered to spend that much time on it. I type really fast, and this five minutes or so is what this is getting from me today.)
