Sounds like you're in a tough place. But you did a job without a contract or money up front, and when you do that, anything can happen.

Honestly, I'd eat this one, suck it up, pay him $50 and move on. If this is a small town and he has pull he might make your life miserable.

Move on. Probably won't happen ever again.

Why WOULD you cut up laminate flooring (I assume) inside of a house? That stuff stinks extremely bad when cut. I know, I just did my own so I know exactly what I speak of. You must be a hack, handyman wannabe dude who thinks he is Mike Holmes. Its your loss, pay the customer to settle up and learn a damn lesson. DO NOT CUT WOOD OR EVEN WORSE---LAMINATES---INSIDE A CUSTOMERS HOUSE. You probably didnt even shut the furnace off either. No wonder he wants a duct cleaning. I cannot believe how stupid you are OP. Uneducated, non-journeyman hack who was probably just a dumb laborer who got fired and now plays carpenter and advertises on Kijiji. REAL contractors have a damn large trailer with its own power and they saw up stuff in there.
I hope you get sued for 10k.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1561549

Idiot, where did he say it was laminate? And who is the hack, handyman wannabe who just did his won house? Are you a professional contractor or carpenter? Journeyman? Do you even know what you are talking about? Come find a journeyman in Texas, I dare you. We have the freedom here to start any type of business we want and do whatever job we want.

Been a carpenter for 20 years. I have a 10' trailer to keep tools in. I can't image having one large enough to cut 16' foot lumber in and still hold all the tools and crap.

In short. YOU ARE THE STUPID ONE.

Oh, and I cut in the yard - because there is no space to cut in the house. And I use the homeowners power. Who would want to listen to a generator all day. Fucking moron.

Big on opinion... short on facts.

It was engineered actually.

The client was ok with cutting inside and watched as work was being done throughout the day.

The only-available cutting area was in the attached-garage downstairs.

I was not on the site and believe me I'm not happy about it, but it's totally unheard of... if you saw what he is considering to be damage, you'd know what I'm dealing with.

I started at 16, am 33 now and have a red-seal from Kwantlen. Over 25,000 hours on the tools. Not a wannabee.

How did the dust get into the house if you were cutting in the garage ? I have been a contractor for 30 years so I know the ropes. Number 1 thing is have a contract and number 2 is temporary protection.

Re: UPDATE: RCMP cop agrees to pay $700 for "free floor installation". VICTORY!!
My company performed $1500 work for RCMP officer Brian Naxxxx. Brian and his wife held payment so they could assess the cost to clean up their house of all sawdust as he is allergic to dust.

I offered to have his entire duct system cleaned, his dry cleaning paid for and a maid service, which all came to $750.. he said no.

He called a restoration company and charged me $1100.00 in cleaning, $250 in a total-home duct cleaning and $200 dry-cleaning for his uniforms that got dust on them. We now owe this RCMP cop $50 according to him. When I said that he was being completely unfair and totally unreasonable and I told him my company would have to lien his house, he threatened to "destroy me". RCMP cop... real nice guy, just ripped us off for $1500 and got a free floor installation.

They seem to only be true friends with those in their group.. and that's their cop buddies and the cop's wives that all hang out together.

One big cabal.
 Quoting: Person445

The Politics of Obedience:
The Discourse of Voluntary Servitude by Étienne de la Boétie

The fact is that the tyrant is never truly loved, nor does he love. Friendship is a sacred word, a holy thing; it is never developed except between persons of character, and never takes root except through mutual respect; it flourishes not so much by kindnesses as by sincerity. What makes one friend sure of another is the knowledge of his integrity: as guarantees he has his friend's fine nature, his honor, and his constancy. There can be no friendship where there is cruelty, where there is disloyalty, where there is injustice. And in places where the wicked gather there is conspiracy only, not companionship: these have no affection for one another; fear alone holds them together; they are not friends, they are merely accomplices.

I see what you guys did OP. When you installed the wood flooring around the vents someone got lazy and you cut them (or a portion of them)free hand with a circular saw. Why didn't you isolate the room and cover the cloths in the closet. I can tell, by the pile of sawdust in the closet or elcove you freehanded alot of that installation. The pictures themselves incriminate you. Hard to get something past me as I have seen alot in my 30 years as a GC. Chalk it up to to an expensive lesson in temporary protection. No excuse for that dust to be everywhere like that.
You should have been cutting outside or have covered up everything with plastic and taped them off.

No wonder the guy got pissed......cutting DUST EVERYWHERE.

Sorry to hear you got screwed P445 :(

I personally refuse to do side work for most people who are in any type of "authority"

I'm not a carpenter or flooring contractor, but a close friend of mine is. He swears by his Melco guillotine for cutting laminates and engineered floors. He says it eliminates 80% of his cutting and its quick, quiet, and dust free.

Google it and see if its something that may save you time and headaches down the road

Chin up, and consider this one of the hard learned lessons in life :)

Yes, this is true. And this is a big principle. People who earn they paychecks from taxpayers should not shortchange the taxpayers.

I wouldn't give it up. Please consider complaining to the source of the funding for his paycheck. Here in the states, that will be equivilent to the state highway patrol, meaning that the paychecks are state funding. I'd go straight to the state delegation and complain that one of their cops is making an effort to not pay you for work that has been. Of course, they'll check to see if you're a taxpayer, and if you have not paid taxes, then that is another story.

Good luck with this.

Sorry, cheap ass, low-life civil servants should have more respect for working citizens.

Just because I see contractors here I made the buy of a lifetime yesterday. I will tell you about it. I bought @ 7.3 AMP Bulldog SDS 3 in 1 Hammerdrill yesterday for $49.99.
It drills, It Chips and it hammerdrills. It also comes with an extra set of brushes and a case.
It is comparable to the Bosch Bulldog that costs over $200.00.
Here is a link as it says $69.99 but I have a coupon code to get it for $49.99

The coupon code is 65214960

I bought 4 of them for my company. I have recieved them and checked them out. Thats why I say "deal of a lifetime"
They are heavy duty and I have owned dozens of Bosch bulldogs. Not anymore !

I then bought this set of SDS bits from ebay for $25

Also the client did not complain about the cutting, until after 3 days of work had been finished.

There made in China as I just looked on one of the drills. When you have guys that work for you that dont give a shit because its not their tools thats why I bought these. I am suprised at how well they are made. The company has a great return policy and its more powerful than a standard bulldog as they have a 6.9 Amp motor this one is 7.3 amp.
Plus you have to consider were my guys work. Sometimes we do projects in a main city and theft happens from the curb to the door of the job (happened more than once - one time they got a $700.00 Bosch masons Chop saw). If they steal one of these I dont cry so much !

Overall a steal of a buy !

A complete setup for $80 - Its a beautiful thing5a

are these from China, North Carolina?

And just how many America jobs did that "steal of a buy" cost again???

^^ Here are the pics of the $1550 worth of "damage"

I see what you guys did OP. When you installed the wood flooring around the vents someone got lazy and you cut them (or a portion of them)free hand with a circular saw. Why didn't you isolate the room and cover the cloths in the closet. I can tell, by the pile of sawdust in the closet or elcove you freehanded alot of that installation. The pictures themselves incriminate you. Hard to get something past me as I have seen alot in my 30 years as a GC. Chalk it up to to an expensive lesson in temporary protection. Dont be lazy or in a hurry and cover people's shit up brah !

I was in your court before, but now that I have seen the pictures and you 100% fucked up !
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34837866

Well the job was not 100% complete and no final cleanup had been done.

Also the client did not complain about the cutting, until after 3 days of work had been finished.

I know Brah ! You are still young. One thing I will tell you is "Never Assume"........................never. When the bill comes due people will look for all kinds of reasons not to pay. If you have a contract and a good temporary protection gameplan you wont lose in the future.

Respectfully !!

I have had to many of the Boschs' stolen. I can't support the criminals like your liberal ass does as I explain why I bought these above. They are a kick ass tool for the money. If you can't accept that, then start your own business and buy all Milwaukee and Bosch tools. But dont cry if the shit gets ripped off from guys like yourself that dont give a shit because they are not your tools.
