Just because you are dead doesn't mean everything you owe becomes null and void. That's why your assets first go into an estate account so any claims made against it can be settled first.

Re: This is what happens when you die and dont cancel your credit card
When my father died, the credit card company tried to hold other members of the family responsible for his debt. When I told them that this was illegal and I was filing a complaint with the AG and filing suit for fraud, they stopped.

Actually, for credit card debt, it does become null and void. Unsecured debt is unsecured.

They have no procedure for someone dying because once someone is dead, they have claim. Why spend money on a procedure that has no legal bearing. I bet lots of people stupidly pay the debt out the estate, which is another reason they don't have a procedure. They don't want this kind of fraud on the books as policy.

What a load of horseshit.

I love the manager, he was ready to have the old gal arrested or something.

I would have been like "Well, you can go dig her bones up and put in jail if you want to, but you still won't get any money out of her".

Paying the debt from the estate is a reasonable thing to do IMO, even if not legally bound to do so.

The credit card companies charge enormous interest rates and annual fees for taking on the risk. They also get to write off the debt as a loss when someone dies, saving money on taxes--assuming they pay any. Really, save what's left for the funeral and the offspring. Screw the credit card companies. They are not suffering, trust me.

I don't have any family left, and before I croak, I am going to run up as much debt on credit crads as I possibly can. Then I'm going to get some more, and run those up too.
