This is a great idea: Using Photography and Photogrammetry to Create a Video Game World (video)
For the upcoming game Rustclad, indie video game studio Skull Theatre is taking a different approach towards designing a virtual world. Instead of creating it entirely inside of a 3D design program and trying to mimic reality, the studio is using a technique called photogrammetry to design the world of Rustclad using photographs of artistically altered real world objects.

According to Skull Theatre, photogrammetry is “the process of creating a geometric representation of an object from photographs.” The team creates (or finds) props in the real world, photographs them from several angles using a custom-built lighting rig and stage, and then uses the freeware software 123D Catch to literally bring these objects into the Rustclad world.

Although the Skull Theatre team was driven to use this technique partially out of a need to find a cheaper solution, the results they’re getting by dressing up real world objects are pretty stunning. Take a look:

The process isn’t new, but to the team’s knowledge this is the first time someone is using photogrammetry to create all of their game art. And although there are a few limitations, there are plenty of advantages too:

I thought about doing this a while back, but at the time the tools for turning real world objects into 3d models were very limited. It was much easier to just make the 3d models and textures digitally.

I love Blender 3d. :P

kinda looks nice artistically but meh i kinda lost interest in games after the super Nintendo died off. Games have gone from being flights of fantasy to murder death kill or trying to mimic reality, rehash after rehash while lacking origionality and gameplay.

games industry is in a sad state these days

rant :)

Most game developers lose touch with their inner gamer. All the work they put into a project makes them start to hate that game. (or games like that game) I hate all my finished games and never want to see them again. It's very hard to keep that passion alive while you work like a slave.

You can't expect independent developers to have graphics like games from Square Enix or Epic Games. They don't have the time or man power to do it. If they went for that high of quality they would never release a game.

Hey my friend I hear ye, having been working over 20 years in the games industry. Having worked on teams of 3 people to teams of over 100. Early days were fun. We just wanted to make fun games for us and for people to play. Slowly the marketing/publishers moved in and took control. Money is king now. And unfortunately creativity and originality took a back seat. Ask a kid now what game do they wanna buy. It's FIFA x, call duty x, etc.

I remember doing ps3 stuff and spending months upon months texturing/modeling stuff that the player would run by in a matter of minutes, that was not interactive with. Meanwhile the gameplay was hideous, a mess of ideas between 10 game designers that couldn't agree on anything.

The golden age was in the late 80s with some beautifully designed arcade/console games that were really unique.

I sound like a moany old so and so I know :). Just think its a shame to see. I know there are still some good games out there and some people love the latest stuff but meh, I kinda like what's been happening with the iPhone/smartphone development but the limitation of the touch screen sucks.

Each to there own really but I just thought I'd get that out :)

Textures make or break a game -- various Microsoft Flight Simulator incarnations had the shittiest textures imaginable and I could never really enjoy the game.
