Work, Rent, Living Troubles, Advice Requested
Hello GLP, hope the day finds everyone well. Here is my situation: I am 33, I live in a nice 1 bedroom apartment and my landlord is great. However, I work as an independent writer, and my income has declined dramatically over the past few months. I have fallen behind two months on my rent, and as of march 9th, it will be three. My landlord has been more than helpful and understanding throughout this time, but I don't want to fall any further behind and get myself into crazy debt. I don't even like owing friends $5. My mom has a a huge place all to herself, and I am seriously considering moving down with her for a couple months, working any job I can find, and just banking the money, paying my landlord back, then starting over. Is this a good idea? I know my landlord will probably continue to let me slide, but I feel absolutely horrible about being as behind as I am, and really don't want to get any worse. I guess I'm really just asking for reassurance that cutting my losses now is the right thing to do, and go get re-established. Thanks for any input, hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Sounds like a great idea to me. Your Mom will probably like having you and if you help out with some things, she'll LOVE having you. Hoping the best for you. hf

If I were in the same situation, I would head to mom's. I think it would be in your best interest to lower your overhead. Good luck OP. hf

You aren't the only one to be in this position, OP. If you can live with your mom, it's probably a smart move. At least, you can write anywhere you call home. Right now, I think everyone here will tell you it's a good thing to stay out of debt. Good luck, hon.

I wish I had more details on your situation but off the top of my head, I would say it is better to stay where you are.
See if your mom would lend you the money to pay the landlord and get up to date or even up to date and a bit ahead if she can afford it and work out a slow payment plan with her.
Once you move back home you will get into the habit of not paying rent and unless you are a good saver, you will find other things to spend the money on. Besides that, if you are a writer, moving in with your mom could really hamper your creativity to make your income even worse. You and your mom may not see eye to eye on how your days should be spent. You may have a great inspiration and want to stay up all night writing and she may want you to walk the dog and do chores starting at 6am. I don't know the situation but I think you see what I mean.
Since you like where you live and have a cool landlord, stay put. Your mom isn't going anywhere so that can always be an option but one I would use as a last resort.

By the way, what type of writing do you do?

There's nothing wrong with turning to family during dire economic times. Call your mom, set up shop, clean her house, do the laundry, cook the meals. Save up some cash, and get back on your feet.

Best of luck to you.

I would move in with my mother if I were you. There is nothing wrong with that. That is what families are for. I had to move in with my mother with my eleven year old son. It is great. I could only find part time work so she helps with watching my son after school. My mother is handicapped so I do all the grocery shopping, cooking & cleaning for our rent. It is well worth it.

17888588,

Thanks for your reply. Mom definitely is not in the position to be handing out loans, and I wouldn't ask anyway - hate being in debt. We have a great relationship, I am an unbelievably great saver of money, and my writing would be in no way restricted by her. I write pretty much everything, I do freelance stuff for magazines and websites of all sorts, and my passion is a long book of interconnected fantasy short-stories that I've been compiling for a couple of years now. Thank you all so much, it really takes a giant load off to communicate with others about this!

Great! I'm sure she'll be happy to see you and help out.
