CDC Warns of Resistance ‘Nightmare’......."we have a very serious problem and we need to sound an alarm"
snip

It’s not often that you get to hear a top federal health official deliberately deploy a headline-grabbing word such as “nightmare,” or warn:
“We have a very serious problem, and we need to sound an alarm.”

Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said both Tuesday, during a press conference announcing new CDC statistics on the advance of the highly drug-resistant bacteria known as CRE. His language — plus the fact that he conducted the entire press conference himself, instead of just making a brief opening statement — seem to me a clear signal that the CDC is taking this resistance problem seriously, and hoping we do too.

And we should. Here’s what the CDC announced Tuesday:

Healthcare institutions in 42 states have now identified at least one case of CRE.
The occurrence of this resistance in the overall family of bacteria has risen at least four-fold over 10 years.
In the CDC’s surveillance networks, 4.6 percent of hospitals and 17.8 percent of long-term care facilities diagnosed this bug in the first half of 2012.

Those are dire reports.

CDC says ‘nightmare bacteria’ a growing threat

Federal officials warned Tuesday that “nightmare bacteria” — including the deadly superbug that struck a National Institutes of Health facility two years ago — are increasingly resistant to even the strongest antibiotics, posing a growing threat to hospitals and nursing homes nationwide.

Although the bacteria, known as Carbapenen-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae, or CRE, haven’t spread to the wider community — like some other germs — they are more dangerous, said Frieden, who described them as a “triple threat.”

First, the bacteria are resistant to all or nearly all antibiotics, even those of last resort, he said. Second, they kill up to half of patients who get bloodstream infections from them. And third, the bacteria can transfer their antibiotic resistance to other bacteria within the family, potentially making other bacteria untreatable, as well.

Never mind,I was just being paranoid:

"Almost all CRE infections occur in patients receiving care for serious conditions in hospitals, long-term acute-care facilities (such as those providing wound care or ventilation) or nursing homes.

These patients often have catheters or ventilators, which can allow bacteria “to get deeply into a patient’s body,” Frieden said.

The germs themselves spread from person to person, often on the hands of doctors, nurses and other health-care professionals.

The CDC said the spread of the germs can be controlled with proper precautions and better practices. Standard infection control precautions include washing hands and dedicating staff, rooms and equipment to the care of patients with CRE. Prescribing antibiotics wisely can significantly reduce the problem.

Patients who are hospitalized can, and should, ask their doctors and nurses to wash their hands before touching them, the officials said. And patients should not always demand antibiotics for their illnesses."

This is all from abuse of antibiotics.

They were and still are passing them out like candy so you end up with this situation.

It will continue to get worse and worse as time goes on, this is bad stuff.

New Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae Warrant Additional Action by Healthcare Providers

Summary: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are untreatable or difficult-to-treat multidrug-resistant organisms that are emerging in the United States. Because of increased reports of these multidrug-resistant organisms, CDC is alerting clinicians about the need for additional prevention steps regarding CRE. Key points include:

While still uncommon, reports of unusual forms of CRE (e.g., New Delhi Metallo-β-lactamase and Verona Integron-mediated Metallo-β-lactamase) in the United States are increasing. Of the 37 unusual forms of CRE that have been reported in the United States, the last 15 have been reported since July, 2012.

This increase highlights the need for U.S. healthcare providers to act aggressively to prevent the emergence and spread of these unusual CRE organisms.

Klebsiella species and Escherichia coli are examples of Enterobacteriaceae, a family of bacteria that normally live in water, soil, and the human gut. CRE are Enterobacteriaceae that have developed high levels of resistance to antibiotics, including last-resort antibiotics called carbapenems. CRE infections most commonly occur among patients who are receiving antibiotics and significant medical treatment for other conditions.

Many gloss over this and say it's nothing, it's just a typical staph infection.

Well, first of all, even a staph infection is to be taken seriously. MRSA can result and we've read enough dreadful articles about patients who have lost their limbs over this.

This is much more serious that a staph infection -- it is resistant to the strongest antibiotic out there.

There is nothing available as a cure, that is why they are sounding the alarm.

Making Health Care Safer
Stop Infections from Lethal CRE Germs Now

CRE infections are caused by a family of germs that are a normal part of a person's healthy digestive system. These germs can cause infections when they get into the bladder, blood, or other areas where germs don't belong.

Some of these germs have become resistant to all or almost all antibiotics, including last-resort drugs called carbapenems. These resistant germs are called CRE.

Almost all CRE infections happen to patients receiving serious medical care. CRE infections are hard to treat, and in some cases, untreatable. CRE kill up to half of patients who get bloodstream infections from them.

In addition to spreading among people, CRE easily spread their antibiotic resistance to other kinds of germs, making those potentially untreatable as well.

This is an article from last August:

‘Superbug’ stalked NIH hospital last year, killing six

As a deadly infection, untreatable by nearly every antibiotic, spread through the National Institutes of Health’s Clinical Center last year, the staff resorted to extreme measures. They built a wall to isolate patients, gassed rooms with vaporized disinfectant and even ripped out plumbing. They eventually used rectal swabs to test every patient in the 234-bed hospital.

Still, for six months, as physicians fought to save the infected, the bacteria spread, eventually reaching 17 gravely ill patients. Eleven died, six from bloodstream superbug infections.

The outbreak of the antibiotic-resistant bacteria known as Klebsiella pneumoniae was not made public until Wednesday, when NIH researchers published a scientific paper describing the advanced genetic technology they deployed to trace the outbreak.

One way germs can spread are those "super sonic flushing" toilets.

There are no lids that you can lower to prevent the fine mist of water "waste", once toilet is flushed, to escape into the environment.

I hate the toilets in the public restrooms that have motion-sensored flushing.

Call me paranoid, but when I travel and have no choice but to use this type of toilet, I cover my mouth, don't breath and rush out of the stall.

Still wondering what outward signs are... my sister has been visiting my grandmother who's been in rehabilitation at a nursing home for a broken hip the last two months.
Today I have been achey and start feeling a sore throat coming on.. I saw my sister while sick now I think I caught it..dummy I am.

My grandmother doesn't have those specific symptoms.. has been fine mostly except for some nausea after meals...blamed on her medication . She has been on a good deal of antibiotics though...as soon as she went to ER for the fall they found a supposed UTI she didn't know she had. She's a sharp woman didn't think she would miss that kinda thing but they pushed the cipro on her right away.
I actually discussed this on a diff thread a month or so ago but the color gave her crazy side effects almost like post stroke plus hallucinations. I thought I lost her for good!

Yes, the articles are vague in regards to stating specific symptoms. I'm still searching.

There is a bug going around still in my state of Michigan.
Friends of mine caught it. It starts out with a sore throat, sometimes a headache.

No fever but there is muscle soreness, fatigue and congestion.

Then a cough develops and can become severe enough to cause lack of sleep.

My closest friend has been battling it for almost 3 weeks now. She lost her voice for about ten days.

My son caught a bug, too. But it was more like a cold virus.

Another lady I know was sick with it, too. She got better, but then it returned.

I saw her earlier today and she sounds like she has bronchitis.

If I find anything more, I will post it.
Take care of yourself, don't worry and pray.

This is an essentially bad bacterium that will thrive as all the other bacteria die off in your intestines.

It is not going away and it is contagious through fecal matter and will spread fast.

Keep up the good info Koffee!

Another lady I know was sick with it, too. She got better, but then it returned.

I saw her earlier today and she sounds like she has bronchitis.

If I find anything more, I will post it.
Take care of yourself, don't worry and pray.

Re: CDC Warns of Resistance ‘Nightmare’......."we have a very serious problem and we need to sound an alarm"
the ones who will be 'immune' to this are those who have never depended on anti biotics to fight infections. like me. i've never used a single antibiotic, and never had a vaccine after early early childhood. because of this, i've never been sick, at-least not since i was ~8. i'm 24. those of you who rush for the doctor for a prescription for every sniffle; get ready for hell. your immune system is weak and unprepared, because you've pampered it for years if not decades. enjoy being owned by microscopic organisms, hope it was worth it, cry babies.

Good excuse to inject/infect the ones deemed "unfit" in institutions and then blame it on this...

You bet that's how it works. All of their flu scares the last few years have been hoaxes, intermingled with reports about how ineffective the vaccines are. That just happened again recently. TPTB really think we are DUMB.

I meant to mention that Cipro, Floxin and Levaquin are 3 antibiotics I would stay away from, unless you absolutely have no other choice. They belong to a class of drugs called quinolone antibiotics.

They are powerful antibiotics with many side effects--some of them severe.

Take a look at this article:

This is an essentially bad bacterium that will thrive as all the other bacteria die off in your intestines.

It is not going away and it is contagious through fecal matter and will spread fast.

Keep up the good info Koffee!

If you have to be on an antibiotic, you should be taking an acidophilus supplement, too.

DDS Probiotics is excellent. Non-dairy and needs to be refrigerated.

Take it 2 hours before or 2 hours after you take the antibiotic.

It will replace the good bacteria in your intestine that the antibiotic has killed.

Deadly bacteria that defy drugs of last resort

The bacteria made headlines this summer after a CRE strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae battered the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center outside Washington, D.C. Seven died, including a 16-year-old boy. (Hospitals don't reveal victims' names in keeping with medical privacy rules.) But that case was neither the first nor the worst of the CRE attacks.

USA TODAY's research shows there have been thousands of CRE cases throughout the country in recent years -- they show up as everything from pneumonia to intestinal and urinary tract infections. Yet even larger outbreaks like the UVA episode, in which seven patients also died, have received little or no national attention until now.
