#3 Daniel Day-Lewis as Daniel Plainview

"Ladies and gentlemen... I've traveled over half our state to be here tonight. I couldn't get away sooner because my new well was coming in at Coyote Hills and I had to see about it. That well is now flowing at two thousand barrels and it's paying me an income of five thousand dollars a week. I have two others drilling and I have sixteen producing at Antelope. So, ladies and gentlemen... if I say I'm an oil man you will agree. You have a great chance here, but bear in mind, you can lose it all if you're not careful. Out of all men that beg for a chance to drill your lots, maybe one in twenty will be oilmen; the rest will be speculators-that's men trying to get between you and the oilmen-to get some of the money that ought by rights come to you. Even if you find one that has money, and means to drill, he'll maybe know nothing about drilling and he'll have to hire out the job on contract, and then you're depending on a contractor that's trying to rush the job through so he can get another contract just as quick as he can. This is... the way that this works."

The greatest actor of this generation is without-a-doubt, Daniel Day-Lewis.

Daniel Plainview, played by Day-Lewis is, even by his standards, an incredible performance. [Helen O'Hara ~ Empire Online]

There Will Be Blood is one of those rare movies that grips you from beginning to end and most of the credit goes to the unbelievable performance by Day-Lewis as Daniel Plainview.

#5 Marlon Brando as 1st Lt. Fletcher Christian

[to Captain Bligh] "You remarkable pig. You can thank whatever pig god you pray to that you haven't turned me into a murderer."

Well you've done rather well, Ned. Promoted to the rank of criminal. Not even 20 and a death sentence on your head.

"I believe I did what honour dictated and that belief sustains me, except for a slight desire to be dead which I'm sure will pass."

"There'll be no more killing aboard this ship, not even Captain Bligh."

This may seem unusual as I think the accepted choices for a top Brando performance would be On The Waterfront or The Godfather. Brando in the top 10 is a foregone conclusion, so the question then becomes which film was he best in. I would probably have chosen Vito Corleone in the #5 position, but it's really a supporting role.

Despite being commonly regarded as a Method actor, Brando saw himself as anything but. He claimed to have abhorred Lee Strasberg's teachings: "After I had some success, Lee Strasberg tried to take credit for teaching me how to act. He never taught me anything. He would have claimed credit for the sun and the moon if he believed he could get away with it. He was an ambitious, selfish man who exploited the people who attended the Actors Studio and tried to project himself as an acting oracle and guru. Some people worshipped him, but I never knew why... Strasberg never taught me acting." [Brando and Lindsey 1994, p. 83.]

Although he declined to accept the award, the Academy gave him top acting honors in 1954 for his portrayal of Terry Malloy in On the Waterfront.

He's (Brando) had enough praise for "I coulda' been a contender".

Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) clocks in at an epic 178 minutes and Brando's on-screen the majority of the film. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it. It's hard to find on the web, but it does air on Netflix now and then.

I haven't seen any of those movies...

I was never a movie-goer until this year. I was determined to watch the Oscars and know why the movies and actors were nominated. I didn't agree with Daniel Day-Lewis getting best actor. I also didn't agree with Argo getting Best Picture.

I saw these movies:

Life of Pi
Les Miserables
Silver Lining Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty
Argo
Lincoln
Skyfall

Re: Top 10 greatest acting performances of all-time
Daniel Day-Lewis has been incredible. My Left Foot, There will be blood, and also Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York could have been another best actor award.

Denzel Washington is pretty damn amazing in everything. I just watched Flight, very underrated, and he drinks a cup of coffee and reflects of his mistakes, no words, and that alone could choke you up. ANother actor that has never been bad in anything I have seen him in.

Pacino and DeNiro are the obvious guys, but neither have done jack since Heat, which is one of my favorite movies....DeNiro did play a great role finally in Silver Linings.

Honestly? My vote for best acting job EVER would be Ben Kingsley in Ghandi. If you see that and then another movie with him, you wouldn't know it was the same guy. He is very underrated.

#8 Ben Kingsley as Gandhi

"Whenever I despair, I remember that the way of truth and love has always won. There may be tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they may seem invincible, but in the end, they always fail. Think of it: always."

"I want to welcome you all. Every one of you. We have no secrets. Let us begin by being clear... about General Smuts' new law. All Indians must now be fingerprinted... like criminals. Men and women. No marriage other than a
Christian marriage is considered valid. Under this act our wives and mothers are whores. And every man here is a bastard."

#6 Paul Newman as Cool Hand Luke

"Anybody here? Hey, Old Man. You home tonight? Can You spare a minute. It's about time we had a little talk. I know I'm a pretty evil fellow... killed people in the war and got drunk... and chewed up municipal property and the like. I know I got no call to ask for much... but even so, You've got to admit
You ain't dealt me no cards in a long time. It's beginning to look like You got things fixed so I can't never win out. Inside, outside, all of them... rules and regulations and bosses. You made me like I am. Now just where am I supposed to fit in? Old Man, I gotta tell You. I started out pretty strong and fast. But it's beginning to get to me. When does it end? What do You got in mind for me? What do I do now? Right. All right."

#2 Robert De Niro as Jack La Motta

[talks about Janiro] "I'm gonna open his hole like this. Please excuse my French. I'm gonna make him suffer. I'm gonna make his mother wish she never had him - make him into dog meat... He's a nice, a nice kid. He's a pretty kid, too. I mean I don't know, I gotta problem if I should fuck him or fight him."

"Though I'm no Olivier / I would much rather... And though I'm no Olivier / If he fought Sugar Ray / He would say / That the thing ain't the ring, it's the play. / So give me a... stage / Where this bull here can rage / And though I could fight / I'd much rather recite /... that's entertainment."

Few performances in the history of cinema can rival De Niro's portrayal of professional boxer and former World Middleweight Champion, Jake La Motta.

The much-improvised profanity of La Motta in the film would make a sailor blush; "Your mother's cunt, you cocksucker!"

Robert De Niro's physical transformation over the film is shocking, going from a perfectly-toned boxer's build to a bloated alcoholic's. His weight increased from 145 to a whopping 215 lbs.

The complete dedication by De Niro is obvious in every frame. The quintessential example of method-acting at it’s finest.

robert de niro - almost any role he plays most notably, raging bull, untouchables, taxi driver, the godfather, you name it hes done it

Gene Hackman - Anther one in the same vain as De Niro, in almost any role he plays this guy is great, most notably Popeye Doyle in the french connection.

Jack Nicholson - One flew over the cuckoos nest, a few good men

joe pesci - goodfellas

Al Pacino - His best performance was in Scarface as Tony Montana and Donnie Brasco, a hugely under rated film imo
