I'm in the Kemah/Clear Lake area and we have lights and no boom sounds.....What area do you mean by "south"....Inside beltway? Inside Loop?

That could be it. We heard a car crash in the distance once from our house that we think damaged a transformer. You could hear this loud screech then BANG and just a few seconds later we heard a really loud boom and the power was out for hours. This other time during a very severe storm, it was so severe they sounded the emergency warning siren.. Anyway, even though the wind, rain, hail and thunder was so intense and loud. We heard this loud boom then a sizzle and the lights were out for hours after that too. The weird thing was our part of the suburb we lived in had underground power so it must have been a transformer from KMs away.

No booming in Sugarland (southwest Houston). Not yet anyway.
