Re: Thoughts & Theories: EARTH'S MOON - Share Your Knowledge
I read the book "Who built the moon" and it all seems a bit weird to me. What about the experiment that we sent missiles to the moon and it rang like a bell for hours? Is that all hokum? I wonder if it's hollow! Well anyway I'm just wondering out loud. Thanks for responding Astro! :D
 Quoting: calx

It's not hollow, we've known that much for a lot longer than our space program. The moon's moment of inertia is nearly that of a homogenous sphere at .4 (just slightly less than that, indicating greater density near the center than at the surface [link to onlinelibrary.wiley.com] ). If it were hollow the moment of inertia would be at or nearly at .66. The "rang like a bell" statement was an analogy, it's not meant to be taken so literally that you think it is like a bell in terms of physical structure.

In fact, it's been badly taken out of context and misused, the statement was not even that it rang like a bell, the statement was that the seismic results were like striking a bell and hearing it ring an hour later. It was just an analogy meant to convey the results in a manner lay people could understand, not to suggest that the moon was actually hollow. The moon continued to "ring" because it's a solid object and does not have nearly as much magma under its surface as earth does.

Re: Thoughts & Theories: EARTH'S MOON - Share Your Knowledge
The Moon has approximately 1/4 Earth's diameter, 1/50 Earth's volume, and 1/80 Earth's mass. Earth is very dense overall (it is the densest planet in the Solar System), but the Moon is light for its size. The difference is partly because Earth has a large core of iron and other heavy metallic elements, while the Moon has only a small core, if it has a core at all.

Hollow Moon.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27646967

By looking at the moment of inertia you can tell that the Moon is fairly uniform in density. It is not hollow

I think the actual quote was that the results from the impact test were 'as surprising as striking a bell and then finding it still ringing an hour later'.

Re: Thoughts & Theories: EARTH'S MOON - Share Your Knowledge
And for anyone who thinks that "doesn't count" as rotation for some reason, imagine these two hypothetical scenarios.

One, the earth vanishes. Just poof, gone, with no change made to the momentum of the moon. The moon continues to orbit the sun on its own; how long is the moon's rotational period in this scenario (hint, it's the same as it is now)?

Two, you're an astronaut standing on the moon at its equator. You have a rocket there on the surface with you and you want to go home back to earth. To save fuel, what direction do you need to launch in to minimize the change in velocity (delta-V) needed to reach lunar orbit? Hint: in order to establish a circular orbit around a planet or moon you need to be traveling at a certain speed at a given radius relative to the center of the planet regardless of its rotation, thus if you launch WITH the rotation of the planet at the equator you essentially get the planet's rotational velocity "for free."
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

Yep.
Even without the earth, an astronaut standing fixed on the moon would experience sunrise, noon, sunset, midnight, sunrise again. They would experience the same things we call "a day" only in this case it is caused by the moon's rotation, not the earth's.
Hint2 - look up the synodic period of the moon.

Yes. There is a reason the US chose Cape Canaveral, the USSR chose Baikonur, the French chose Guiana, etc.
It is all to get as close to the equator as possible within political boundary considerations. This maximizes the "free ride" from the earth's rotation.
Same thing on the moon.

Have fun.

Re: Thoughts & Theories: EARTH'S MOON - Share Your Knowledge
A summary:

I've had several dreams of working on a base at the moon. This sounds strange, but the first time I was there I saw a tiny US flag emblem. The last dream I had about the moon base was regarding some of the higher ups becoming corrupt in the mission and I was basically defecting, trying to get someone from Earth to come pick me back up so I ciuld get to safety before exposing them.

Also, I thought it interesting the Rosicrucians call Jehovah 'Regent of the Moon'. Maybe he corresponds to the Chomse of Egypt. Lately I've been curious as to some very ancient legends depicting the Moon as a male force (Sumer, Egypt at one time) and the Sun as female (Japan, Norway, etc.)

Rather I believe it was intelligently placed there around the time our earth entered a place in the galaxy where it could potentially foster life, millions of years ago and all that.

It was likely "towed" here from somewhere else and positioned precisely where it is to facilitate a multitude of rythmatic cycles required for life!

I also think it serves as a soul-trap for people trying to leave the planet without having earned it. It's like, they can't travel beyond our solar system until they've been 'purified' I believe. So some where in the hollow of the moon the Lord's of Karma are serving in their astral laden metallic armor ready to enforce universal law, very reptillian O.o
 Quoting: Hales

Thank you SO MUCH for sharing that with the class. That resonates perfectly, and makes so much more sense than the 'the Moon facilitates a soul trap for the purpose of harvesting our energy for insectiod aliens' theory of whatever. There is truth in your words.

The 'soul trap' thing reminds me of gestation of which the Moon represents astrologically.

In the womb, the amniotic sac protects the growing fetus from the anitbodies of the mother which would effectively target and destroy the fetus as an alien parasite, so in essence the amniotic sac and fluid can be likened to this 'soul trap' until the baby is mature enough to be born into the outside world. Or something along those lines.

Sure it does. It is called confirmation bias. You look for the behavior more during the full Moon.

"Researchers found little evidence that the moon's lunar cycles were linked to an increased incidence of mental health concerns."

"One popular idea is that maternity wards tend to fill up during a full moon. Not true, according to research.
Scientists have also debunked the notion that rates of accidents and suicides go up when the moon is full."

Somewhat mixed results here. No link for lunacy or deviant behavior but increases in sleep deprivation and pet injuries

The majority of what I find shows no links. The few that assert there is a link are usually statistically flawed or later debunked.

he's right about it not being hollow. He's right about the moment of inertia. And the long seismic disturbances point to a more homogenous body than a hollow one. The seismic waves have less to bounce off of as they pass through the moon until they get to the other side and repeat. A liquid core or hollow space would dampen the vibrations quicker.

Re: Thoughts & Theories: EARTH'S MOON - Share Your Knowledge
We must consider the military behavior of the biggest military powers. They have the most advanced space programs as well. USA and Russia. So, both countries were making trips to the Moon and not just once. Usually, when army takes control over no-man's land, rich on resources, the next logical step is to build a base and strengthen positions, then establish full control over the place.

"The Soviet manned lunar programs were a series of programs pursued by the Soviet Union to land a man on the Moon in competition with the United States Apollo program to achieve the same goal set publicly by President John F. Kennedy on May 25, 1961. The Soviet government publicly denied participating in such a competition, but secretly pursued two programs in the 1960s: manned lunar flyby missions using Soyuz 7K-L1 (Zond) spacecraft launched with the UR-500K (Proton) rocket, and a manned lunar landing using Soyuz 7K-L3 and LK Lander spacecraft launched with the N1 rocket. Following the dual American successes of the first manned lunar orbit on December 24–25, 1968 (Apollo 8) and the first Moon landing on July 20, 1969 (Apollo 11), and a series of catastrophic N1 failures, both Soviet programs were eventually brought to an end: the Proton / Zond program was canceled in 1970, and the N1 / L3 program was terminated de facto in 1974 and officially canceled in 1976. Details of both Soviet programs were kept secret until 1990, when the government allowed them to be published under the policy of glasnost."

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

I think there are 2 possible scenarios:
1. They went there and already built their bases.
2. They went there but were exorcised by a stronger power.

They can reach the Moon in 8 hours. How long does it take to make a trip to China?

I don't believe they just gave up and left the Moon forever, but trying to explore much more distant places, like Mars.
