More than 50% of the price of gasoline is tax. If cars got 75 mpg the amount of gas sold would drop 60%. and tax revenue off gas sales would drop 60%-loss of billions and billions in tax revenues to states. Government does NOT want good gas mileage.

I have a diesel Jette that gets a bonified 55 mpg right now.

We've known for years they had 65 mpg cars that werent allowed in.

I ride my enduro most days. It gets 85 mpg. I rarely spend on gas.

The best thing you can do is to convert your car to run on ethanol or biodiesel and then make the fuel yourself.

If you can use a bicycle for shorter trips when the whether is nice and you don't have a lot of stuff you need to carry around.

Basically anything you can do to starve them of the tax revenue they are trying to squeeze out of you.

Soon 3D printers will allow us to print our own chassis and we'll just need to drop the engines/battery systems we want into them and fill the rest out with off the shelf parts.

Its allot deeper than this my friends.. I am a farmer,, and due to the newer laws written by and FOR the EPA,, we now have to spend $10,000 more for a tier 4 100hp tractor than it cost just 2 years ago with tier 3 smog rating.. The tier 4s burn twice the fuel,, cost an extra $10,000 and the air coming out of the muffler is cleaner than what is sucked into the engine to be burned..

I am old enough to remember seeing the foam around the edges of the great lakes,, I remember the smell of all the fumes from cars back in the 1965 in a large city,, I remember..

But where Europe is different,, they found a happy middle ground between smog,, and fuel mpg and said lets try it and see how it goes.. If the smog does not go away we can always later demand a higher level..

But our out of control EPA in the USA,, is choking us all to death,, reaching for an impossible dream and I feel is to blame for most of our country's money problems at this moment.

The EPA runs un checked,, with no over sight from anyone.. Its time to tell them to back the fu99 off and get real and adjust standards back that REACH for that common sense middle ground and be happy with it.

I agree that some point its like the fellow said about the road taxes,, but if our country was not bankrupt,, there would be money for road repair,, but everyone in govt steals from it so nothing is left for roads.

The news outlets dont care because as they are bought and sold by the banks and oil companies. Their keepers are us the tax payers through the Gobermant pr--o--xie filters and they are trying to support the dollar/petrodollar through the purchase and sale of oil "only" in dollars. As consumption plummets we must be force fed more and more. So what do they do ? add more ethanol (8% more) so that we burn even more gasoline and per gallon even more inefficient.

70 duster with a slant six 35 mpg how come cars 43 years later are not getting 350 mpg ? or hell even 100 ? 43 years of technology tne mpg is the same in lots of commonly sold cars.

I remember attempting to buy and import a smart car years before they were in the US. Similar roadblocks were put in the way, and now the car is priced out of the reach of many of the consumers it could be reaching, not to mention it's sold at Mercedes dealerships....could have been done a better way, I think.

It's all because the oil company dinosaurs want their revenue. We could have 200mpg cars and all they would do is raise the gas prices accordingly so they can keep their coffers filled. It screws up the supply and demand ratio, so they ban the imports until they can adjust their price gouging.

I'd love to convert my car to run on cooking oil. I'd get it from KFC so every time I start the car it'd smell like a chicken wing.
