Depends on which direction you're looking. Those in the northern hemisphere typically look in a Southern direction towards the Moon. Those in the Southern typically look North. The changed view of the moon is simply due to the observer being turned a different direction.

I'd leave DR.Astro alone to dis others. There is still room to grow. Maybe just maybe when he realises that the face of the moon which never stops facing the earth is not rotating..

On the equator the moon's appearance as being "typical of northern" or "typical of southern" will depend on the declination of the moon.

The moon's being tidally locked to earth has nothing to do with field rotation. Field rotation is an apparent motion caused by the altitude-azimuth perspective of the observer and is independent of the motion of an object's true rotation. You can see that in this time lapse of Jupiter's rotation which was also filmed from an altitude-azimuth perspective (no Jupiter did not actually "tilt.")


No, it did not. See above. Field rotation applies to Jupiter as well. I have proven that the moon was supposed to look like that due to field rotation, and I have provided my calculations in the form of an excel sheet anyone can look at and examine for themselves. So go ahead, show where my calculations are wrong.

Given the orbit, I see Venus during the day (well, during the late afternoon/early evening) at least as often as I see it at night.

Jupiter, not so much, but I've certainly seen it near dusk on plenty of nights.

Exactly. So when you're on the equator you can be looking East, or West depending on if it is rising or setting or even North or South because the moon's orbit takes it North and South of the equator. So again, it depends on which direction you are looking.

Imagine you're on the equator looking at the moon. The shadow is on the left. Then later on, the shadow is on the right. That could happen right? Is there an intermediate stage, or does it just suddenly flip over and the shadow goes from left to right side?

The shadow is almost never "on the right" or "on the left." It is at some sort of angle. Over the course of a night, that angle changes. Gradually.

Think of the Moon as doing a slow pinwheel, one rotation lasting 24 hours.

Let's make it easier:

Imagine you're on the equator looking at the moon. The terminator (the line between the dark and the lit part) is almost parallel to the horizon and at moon rise the lit part is down and the shadow up.
When the time goes on you have to look more and more up - lit part still down and shadow up.
When the moon is in the zenit you have to look straight up - lit part still down and shadow up.
As the moon moves on (resp. as earth rotates further) you have to bow back - lit part still down and shadow up.

And because you don't want to fall on your ass, you turn around - and surprise: lit part up and shadow down.

It's not the moon, that apparently rotates - it's earth and you.



It depends on how you move.
In the above example it's a flip over because you "flip over".
