When a guy with an indian accent calls you up and tells you his name is Sylvester, there's your red flag. They usually pick the most obvious fake names....

Re: Beware of This Computer Scam! You Will Have Personal Information Stolen!
Windows sucks....
I used to love windows...until after getting malware, the good ol' Nimda virus way back in the day, trojans, worms...no matter what virus/malware/firewall software....windows always seemed to get infected and I ended up having to completely reformat and reinstall about 15 times in 8 years.

(no...I'm not a 'safe' internet surfer...and no, not because of porn..lol)

5 years ago, I switched to Linux/Ubuntu...and since then, no infections except ONE java/firefox problem.

In Ubuntu...the desktop is similar to mac....all the programs are 'clones' of either windows/mac. Your system files are NOT able to be altered without you, yourself going through passwords and command lines.
if you want to rip a movie or cd...no prob...no copyright protection for you to *ahem* back up your files.

There IS a learning curve, of course...like switching from pc to mac....but once you've learned it, you'll never go back and you'll want to take a big ol' dump on all windows and apple machines.
linux also has 'shells'....so if you want your desktop to look JUST like apple...no prob....

anyways, I know I went on a rant there, but my point is....windows sucks ass.

I think if my husband got this call he would give it up. As long as they mentioned "windows" he'd think it was legit.

Not sure if I would or not.. as I used to work in Loss Prevention.

Bad Guy: "Good Luck"

Reminds me of this scene from the movie, "Taken",
when the good guy promises to destroy the evildoers.

Bryan: I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.

Marko: [after a long pause] Good luck.

Someone on another board said that you should not use the reply to links on Backpage ads because of what they could do with your IP information. Is that true? I don't think unless it is law enforcement that your IP address is much good to a fake buyer/seller.

Oh you know what would be really fun?
Act like an idiot and make them walk you through how to turn on the computer. That could kill half an hour.
 Quoting: The Loophole

I had the same thing happen a couple of weeks ago. When I told my friends about it one person said he wished they would call him. He would lead them on for over an hour saying he could not understand their accent or ask stupid questions which would take some time to be answered, etc.

Finally after about an hour he would tell them their instructions and workings they wanted him to do just didn't work right on his MAC!!!

Wished I had thought of that.

I just answer the phone and frantically speak fast while I have my shotgun loaded with blanks and shoot'em off and frantically with bloody scream yell "I have been shot...fuck...I...I...I...don't...fuck...want to...fuck....die...4 more shots go off and silence on my end".

Not advisable.

I got a call from

(456)-985-38963

I dont know where these people are located... they sound like they hail from India... but have more of a "bite" to their accent... their english is decent... anyways...

They called from "Windows Operating System" (that was their claim, I instantly knew this was a scam...)

He tells me I have a virus on my computer. They can tell this from my internet usage...

I proceeded to tell him in the best Dr.Acula accent I can muster:

"All my computers were monitored closely and they are 100% virus free."

He then asks me to turn my computer on and give him access to it and he will show me the viruses I dont know about...

I then told him I work in IT and know how to secure my systems... (I used to, not anymore, he didnt know that)

he then begins this panic like mumbling:
"oh sir, yes sir, uhhhhh, yes I... oh... As you wish sir."

I was nice and said

"Thank you for your scam attempt, may you rot in Hell" and I hung up...

Well I have two phone lines... a few minutes later I get a call on the 2nd phone from the same people...

Its "Mike" from 'Windows Operating System, a free service offered for users of windows' jerkit

Once more in my best Dr.Acula accent I told "Mike" that I just received a call from them... and I was on to their lil scam...

He was like... "uhhh no this is no scam... it is a free service, blah blah"

I told them i didnt want them to have access to my computer to install malware that will mine my information...

Mike says "No, no, no no scam"

Acula says "Yes, yes, yes yes credit card stealing scammers... I will tell everyone I know about your little scam, Im onto you boy"

He told me "Good Luck with that" and hung up...

Well Mike... FUCK YOU, I'm a man of my word...

GLP if you get a call from that number or any asshole who wants control of your computer... DO NOT let those bastards have access to your computer!

alright a bit of information about the area code (456)

Area code 456 is a non-geographic area code used to route inbound calls from locations outside the North American Numbering Plan Area to specific carriers for carrier-specific services.
 Quoting: Wikipedia: [link to en.wikipedia.org]

So yes it is a foreign scam outfit...

I googled the number and found some comments that people left on another site that confirms this is a scam...

So once again "Mike" you scamming bastard...

Got those nuts calling all the time. Even call when i'd not used our PC in over half a year since it broke. Apparently our Windows PC had a virus, despite using a Mac. Not that I needed them to screw up to know it was a scam...it was pretty obvious from the moment words started coming from their mouth.

myself if i get a call on the land line, since i dont usually use it,i just pick up the reciver and stay silent
if its a call from a offshore callcentre it will wait till i speak before it connects me with a dodgey accented whoever
if after about 15 seconds nobody speaks first i just hang up
if its important and an actual person has called me they usually say hello

this works every time

on the odd occasion someone speaks first who isnt from the country im in i also just hang up.
important phone calls never originate from outside the country
