Maybe the subs in the pacific are doing nuclear missiles drills just in case NKorea goes nuts and they need to nuke the shit out of them.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 35645824

Orders to SSBNs come from Navy TACAMO aircraft on a different freq.

Radio-tard here. Been listening to shortwave all day and the military has been sending an abnormally high amount of EAMs (Emergency Action Message)Most have been from Andrews AFB and Offut AFB

For those who don't know what an EAM is here is some info: [link to mt-milcom.blogspot.com]
[link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

And here's an example of what one sounds like:

 Quoting: Maj0rRag3r

I drove thru Omaha today, nothing unusual on the radio. I'm in Lincoln now & have the TV on, nothing there either.

fascinating...didn't know about these until this thread. Amazing they've never been decoded.
 Quoting: Super Bowl Dave

I know. People have tried for decades though.
...

I sure hope so. That one came from Offutt AFB.
 Quoting: Maj0rRag3r

where the heck is that?
 Quoting: godzilla85

Near Omaha, Nebraska. Since it's shortwave the radio waves travel around the world.
 Quoting: Maj0rRag3r

B52s stationed there?
 Quoting: godzilla85

I'm not sure and I don't know how to find that out.

Thank you for the bump. I wish I was able to decode them. If anyone has a sideband capable shortwave receiver tune to 11175KHz and 8992KHz as it begins to get dark. Mode is USB. I haven't heard one in about 20 minutes now.
 Quoting: Maj0rRag3r

They cannot be decoded as they are not code. They might as well just say, "execute instruction 5" as these messages reference pre-written instructions. Unless you've got their book of instructions, they could mean anything.

I read a story a couple days ago that the USA has a lot of subs deployed to the NK area.

This would makes sense with relation to the EAM traffic.

Love that movie, and that makes sense to me. Unless there's something else big going on out there we don't know about
 Quoting: Maj0rRag3r

To me, it just seems they are keeping abridged of the situation.
Those subs can shoot down any nukes launched....and launch their own if need be.

This is interesting indeed. What could be the reason for the EAM uptick? Perhaps it is somehow connected to the Korea Crisis? I wonder if we in Russia have something similar. Then we'll know for sure if things were going down.

Exactly.. if you dont have the book (current distro) then "21Z" has absolutely no meaning. I would be worried if they also begin transmitting authentication as a footer to the msg.

Yep.
The spoken EAM's are encrypted keys.

Still strange why they voice transmit them versus using digital means.
Must be for some security reason.

There are exercises occurring near NK with the US and SK at this time.

According to the MT website you referenced:

"According to the instruction above an EAM may pertain to "a real emergency, a scheduled exercise, or a special test." So one of the important things that monitors need to keep in mind is that not "all" EAMs involve critical real world events."

I'm guessing it's related to the exercises.

Could be for reliability and interchangeability.. the spoken word can be decoded by any human with the red book and authentication tables.. the packet modes would require some other complex gear (much like a pactor)that would add to the complexity of the system and also packet modes are not as fool proof as phonetics sent in the blind and picked up by the Mark-I human ear.

This may not have anything to do with the eam's but a Navy fighter plane went down about 50 miles from were I live this am at 9:45. Witnesses said that the plane exploded and the explosion was so loud that it shook the ground for miles. It was said to have exploded and then come straight down nose first. It happened in lincoln County, wa. near harrington.

They do 11175, 8992 and several others at the same time but the lower frequencies propagate better at night and the higher frequencies better during the day.
