Well, they say that there is a cabal of people who are have ran the world for a very long time, & wish to do so forever; they refer to this cabal as The Old World Order (as opposed to the 'New' World Order, that the Illuminati DO wish to implement for the advancement & liberation of mankind).

The setup is very much like the scenario in George Orwell's famous book Nineteen Eighty-Four, so much so that I'm sure that Orwell was a member, or knew a member very, very well.

The situation was similar in Roman times, but the lesson learned by the OWO is that control by overt means will only last until the slaves revolt, the MO now is much more covert.
