Its not a stretch. European names are related. Have a look at this webpage about italian surnames: [ link to www.italyworldclub.com] "BERGO, BERGONZI : Originary from the Germanic word "berg"(monte) meaning mountain" I beg to disagree and I would maintain my opinion. Read Malachy's prophecy again: "In the last persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there will sit Peter the Roman, [...]" To me, this phrase clearly bears much more symbolism than a simple translation "mountain-river-in-Italy"
