Does the name Bergoglio have any meaning?

I'll note that GOG is in the middle.

"Thus said the Lord: Behold, I am against you, Gog, the prince, leader of Meshech and Tubal.[6]"

Pope Francis' father's name is Mario, which means "bitter, king-ruler" in Hebrew. His mother"s name was Regina, which means "queen" in Latin.

Making him... the PRINCE.

"Ezekiel's Gog from Magog was a symbol of the evil darkness of the north and the powers hostile to God,[1] but in Revelation, Gog and Magog have no geographic location, and instead represent the nations of the world, banded together for the final assault on Christ and those who follow him.[21]"

Someone mentioned that media are NOT saying he is Jesuit, is that just in USA??? Its splattered everywhere over here in UK
 Quoting: jacks04

Anderson Cooper on CNN was interviewing someone who said Pope Francis is a Jesuit.

And then Anderson asked the gentleman he was interviewing to explain what that means. What is a Jesuit?

And the gentleman answered "The Society of Jesus"

The Jesuits are RARELY talked about on MSM

UNTIL NOW

They were mentioned in a roundabout way in the Olympics when Missy Franklin won all those medals. It seemed to me that the media talked about her going to a Jesuit school a lot...just seemed weird to me that they made such a point to mention it.

Re: Pope Francis middle name means Peter
I believe in Malachay's prophecies BUT attributing the new pope choosing his name as Francis honors St. Francis of Assisi is just wrong. St. Francis Xavier was the founder of the Jesuits. That's why he took the name.

My parish is a Jesuit Parish and the school, connected to it, is Jesuit as well. I know the Jesuits very well and have always found them to be the most open-minded of the orders (except the Franciscans). They are the intellectuals of the church and it takes much longer to become a Jesuit priest than any other order. They do wear black cassocks for everyday wear.

Good try with the Francis link, but it's based on false information. The "Peter the Roman" metaphor will reveal itself in time. The Malachy prophecies are very seldom deciphered on the first day of the pontificate.

Why bother going to all that trouble to make him "the prince"? Just look at the papal crown.

#1. "The Pope is of so great dignity and so exalted that he is not mere man, but as it were God, and the vicar of God."
(#1. "Papa tantae est dignitatis et cesitudinis, ut non sit simplex homo, sed quasi Deus, et Dei vicarius.")

#13. "Hence the Pope is crowned with a triple crown, as king of heaven and of earth and of the lower regions."
(#13. Hinc Papa triplici corona coronatur tanquam rex coeli, terre et infernoram.")

This is too much of a stretch, OP.

Saint Francis is the namesake. His first name alone was chosen.
As the pope did not select two names, he is only Francis.

Also, Assisi is not Rome.

You're making up too much. It doesn't work.

But the Jesuit thing is a closer match. It is a way of having the euphemism of "black pope" actually apply.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31263808

Agreed, AC -- this IS too much of a stretch.

Besides, this pope seems WAY too conservative to allow himself to become the "False Prophet" of the Antichrist.

Oh for crying out loud. I would find it much more improbable to NOT be able to somehow link a pope to the name 'Peter.' Uhm, he was the first Pope - the one Jesus chose to hold the keys to the Kingdom.

God has sent a clear sign - it is as Christ promised - the Gates of Hell shall not prevail against his Church. Turn the page - on to the next doomsday prophecy.

Uhm, St. Ignatius of Loyola founded the Jesuit order. St. Francis Xavier was one of his first students, but your information is a little off. Also, the Church has declared the prophecy of St. Malachy a fraud - look into it. It's pretty clear that there is no validity to it - all the accuracies were written after the pontificates and before the fraudulent document was made.

Re: Pope Francis middle name means Peter
He fits the description of the last pope. He is of Italian ancestry. He may have been born in Argentina, but his parents are both Italian. "Roman" may not neccessarily be a place of birth, but could be a philosophy, a way of thinking or a life structure. When it comes to being a traditional thinking Catholic cleric, he is very "Roman" indeed. Who better to fit the description of the last pope that will lead his flock through the tribulation, than one who truly deserves the shepards hook, a traditionalist.
As for the name, Peter, a pope can be referenced as "Peter", such as the first pope who WAS Peter.
In this case, the new pope took the name "Francis", which is directly a reference to Saint Francis of Assisi. Who's baptisimal name in english would translate to "Peter". Saint Francis of Assisi was very humble, as the new pope appears to be.
Time will tell if the prophesy has been fulfilled.

Guys, don't be pushed into trying to find a pattern where there is none. St Malachy's prophecy has been known to be a forgery for a long time.. There are 2 versions out there which no one knows is even the correct one that should be associated with St Malachy in the first place..

If anything, Tarcisio Bertone, the one who temporarily took Pope Benedict XVI's place after his resignation fits the Petrus Romanus description far better than this new pope does.. However, if Rome explodes while Francis I is pope, then I'll eat my words. rolleyes

Re: Pope Francis middle name means Peter
Here is my take on St. Malachy's prophecy as well as Nostradamus:

The new pope is from Argentina which was a former colony of Spain.
The colonial Argentina is the period of the History of Argentina when it was an overseas colony of the Spanish Empire. It follows the precolumbian age of the indigenous peoples of Argentina, with the arrival of the first Spanish conquerors in the 16th century, and ends in the 19th century with the begin of the Argentine War of Independence.

[link to en.wikipedia.org]
 Quoting: wikipedia

According to Nostradamus, the pope that was truly elected is from ancient France and not from Spain (or its colony, Argentina) - it is interesting to note that Argentina became a colony of Spain during Nostradamus' lifetime.

Century 5, Quatrain 49
Not from Spain but from ancient France
Will one be elected for the trembling ship,
To the enemy will a promise be made
Who will cause a cruel plague during his reign.
 Quoting: Nostradamus

Is Nostradamus suggesting that a manipulation of the votes took place to install a cardinal from "Spain" as pope instead of the cardinal from ancient France who was truly elected?

Is the cardinal from ancient France actually Petrus Romanus, and the cardinal from "Spain" the dreadful judge?

In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there will sit [i.e., as bishop].

Peter the Roman, who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations, and when these things are finished, the city of seven hills [i.e. Rome] will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The End
 Quoting: St. Malachy

Tarcisio Bertone btw was born from a part of Italy that once belonged to ancient France, and he also "sat" as bishop of Rome/camerlengo after Benedict's resignation and before the new pope's "election".

San Francesco d'Assisi, nato Francesco Giovanni di Pietro Bernardone (Assisi, 26 settembre 1182[1] – Assisi, 3 ottobre 1226), è stato un religioso italiano.

[link to it.wikipedia.org (secure)]
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13258438

and another connection to Peter is St Francis' restoration of the ruined church of San Damiano which was dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle.......

Among such episodes, the most important, according to his disciple and first biographer, Thomas of Celano, occurred at the ruined chapel of San Damiano outside the gate of Assisi when Francis heard the crucifix above the altar command him: “Go, Francis, and repair my house which, as you see, is well-nigh in ruins.” Taking this literally, Francis hurried home, gathered some fine cloth from his father’s shop, and rode off to the nearby town of Foligno, where he sold both cloth and horse. He then tried to give the money to the priest at San Damiano, whose refusal prompted Francis to throw the money out the window. Angered, his father kept him at home and then brought him before the civil authorities. When Francis refused to answer the summons, his father called him before the bishop of Assisi. Before any accusations were made, Francis “without a word peeled off his garments even removing his breeches and restored them to his father.” Completely naked, he said: “Until now I have called you my father on earth. But henceforth I can truly say: Our Father who art in heaven.” The astonished bishop gave him a cloak, and Francis went off to the woods of Mount Subasio above the city.

Francis renounced worldly goods and family ties to embrace a life of poverty. He repaired the church of San Damiano, refurbished a chapel dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle,
