I experience this every year and I must say it is an odd experience.. It is odd being uable to move however it is scary for a different reason.. I am unsure what it is but whenever it happens to me I am petrified, sheer terror and all I am able to do is moan slightly then my partner wakes me. Odd sensation to say the least.

I used to work early Sunday morning, and was often out the night before. After work I'd usually take a siesta and about half of these siestas I got sleep paralysis. I kind of enjoyed it, if you want to give it a shot the best way I found was to mess with your sleep paterns, try going to bed some time you usually wouldn't.

Note, as op says it can be scary, if you want to snap out of it focus on moving your toes, then the rest of your body snaps out of it.
I don't think so,

How about this but lasts for enough time to hear clock ticking in room across the house, wife and children play in living room.... then you hear something small coming to your room something like a small dog or big cat...you know you have no pets...you can hear it's nails making scratching noise on your hardwood floor and then you can feel it jumps on your bed...no you cant see it because of course it just "sleep paralysis" you can almost see it ...you fell how its weight pulling a blanket while trying to climb on your bed then it walks over your legs and positions it self right on the pillow really really close to your neck....you could hear it breath ..you try to look but cant move and with titanic effort you actually turn your head to face this shadow creature.....you will wake up...world will come back to normal.

They call it the "Old Hag"...

In Finnish and Swedish folklore, sleep paralysis is caused by a mare, a supernatural creature related to incubi and succubi. The mare is a damned woman, who is cursed and her body is carried mysteriously during sleep and without her noticing. In this state, she visits villagers to sit on their rib cages while they are asleep, causing them to experience nightmares. The Swedish film Marianne examines the folklore surrounding sleep paralysis.

Folk belief in Newfoundland, South Carolina and Georgia describe the negative figure of the hag who leaves her physical body at night, and sits on the chest of her victim. The victim usually wakes with a feeling of terror, has difficulty breathing because of a perceived heavy invisible weight on his or her chest, and is unable to move i.e., experiences sleep paralysis. This nightmare experience is described as being "hag-ridden" in the Gullah lore. The "Old Hag" was a nightmare spirit in British and also Anglophone North American folklore.

In Newfoundland, it is known as the 'Old Hag'. In island folklore, the Hag can be summoned to attack a third party, like a curse.

In Iceland folk culture sleep paralysis is generally called having a Mara. A goblin or a succubus (since it is generally female) believed to cause nightmares.

I've been experiencing sleep paralysis a lot lately. I feel like something is trying to drag me out of my body. Its weird.

I haven't experienced anything weird since I started sleeping with a myan plate calendar next to my pillow. Don't know why but it keeps me safe from this entity that attacks me in my sleep.

I've had this happen to me before -- but instead of my whole body being paralyzed it's more my head/neck than anything. Whenever I find myself paralyzed after waking up abruptly, I'll usually just roll my body to the side and I snap out of it. Not really all too scary in my opinion. Lol.

Re: Ever woken up, but couldn't move a muscle? You're not alone. It's called sleep paralysis and it can be really scary (video)
Thanks for posting this I have at least 6 episodes of this a year. Sometimes all in the same week I either feel paralyzed or frozen in fear like there is someone or something in the room.
I can see the room around me but im being strangled or something is trying to drag itself through my body and across the room!
I try to fight it and can hear myself saying close ur eyes and you will wakeup. I slip in and out of reality or something it is crazy and hard to understand.
It scares me most when I see things like spiders crabs and they are crawling on me, I shake the sheets in a frenzy!
I scream in utter terror and disbelief then my partner tries to wake me! I can see him and i am screaming get out of the bed now!!!
The scariest is the man he is always cloaked and either stands over me or in the corner of the room!!!
I am sleeping then I open my eyes as if I can sense danger like someone is watching me.
I look across and he is standing there looking at me I can never make out a face.
I cant move an inch I cant scream out I am paralyzed with fear.
Then my head says run get out, I run around trying to figure out what to do. Convinced he is in there I am naked lol I even contemplate running into my flatmates room!!
I am screaming and thankfully my boyfriend wakes to see me terrified I see him he looks terrified and concerned!
He has to come and get me to go back into the room assuring me he is not there. He has to hold me down in the bed until iam relaxed enough to try to go back to sleep.
My heart feels like its about to literally explode and he can also feel this and rocks me to sleep.
I saw an alien fly in my window as well hahaha how mad am I!
Sorry had to share!

Yeah, this happens to me a couple times every few months. I freak out pretty bad in my head, but I have to gradually start moving (wiggle my fingers, then I begin to be able to move my arms, then my body moves again). And then its super hard to fall back asleep and right when I am asleep/still awake if that makes any sense, my mind goes crazy and I can't move again. Idk it's weird.

Re: Ever woken up, but couldn't move a muscle? You're not alone. It's called sleep paralysis and it can be really scary (video)
I experienced this many times starting when I was very young. I would wake up suddenly and would not be able to move and would try to cream out for help and no sound would come out at all. It lasted for about a minute or two and I never experienced it again until I was in my late 20's. When I was in my 20's the same thing happened numerous times but the difference was this time it lasted for over and hour and a half and it has not happened again since. I feel for anyone that experiences this phenomenon. It can definitely be scary no matter if you are a child or an adult to experience this. To suddenly wake up and not be able to move or talk and be aware of your surroundings while it happens is very unnerving.

Re: Ever woken up, but couldn't move a muscle? You're not alone. It's called sleep paralysis and it can be really scary (video)
I have had sleep paralysis since my mid teens. For 25+ years I have had this experience and it doesn't seem as though it will go away any time soon. When I had my first 'attack' ever I thought someone was sitting on my chest, seeing others in my room, breathing was terrible. I did have a sleep study done and the simple fact is that your body is still asleep but your brain is waking up slower. While sleeping, your brain cuts off the radical motion to your body simply so you can keep from hurting yourself. I find that if you can will a body part to move, it's not easy, it will begin to wake the body. I've several times made myself fall out of bed simply to wake up. Breathing is something that you really have to concentrate on because it feels as though it is quite a chore to do. Now being so used to it, I've been able to understand what exactly is happening, usually it will occur just going to sleep or just awakening. No aliens, devils on the chest or any other ghosts that some people swear by. When it occurs, concentrate on your breathing firstly and then begin to motion a body part to move. A leg swung off the bed is almost always a cure. Or if you have another next to you, try to get a leg or arm to start touching them if at all possible. Your husband or wife should know your issue and my wife will literally shake me to awake me. It sucks but if you understand the medical issue and semi-cures available, you can make this problem easier on your spouse and yourself.

BS. I've experienced this for a period of many months and it's an ATTACK.

Strange though, every time seemed to involve water, as if what I was dreaming was a front for what was really going on... even an isolated case a decade before the series of sleep paralysis attacks. Something would keep pushing me back into the sleep state, while I'd keep trying to force myself awake, and a struggle would ensure all while I'd be gasping for air.

So, knowing that you're fighting something who's stealing your breath and preventing you from waking IS pretty horrifying, brah. It's some sort of astral parasite is my best guess... although I'm not guessing.

The worst part about it is when I can't breathe for a few seconds. That's when I panic. The paralysis itself (of limbs) is fine, just the not breathing part is very scary.

The night hag. I went through a period of years where I got this all the time, it gradually filtered out but I still get it very occasionally. It starts out I wake up and something is sitting on my chest holding all my body from movement, this went on for something like a couple of hours sometimes, i couldn't scream , shout and sometimes really struggled to breathe, when it got that bad i was shitting myself and became convinced something was attacking me every night some kind of spirit, you can laugh as it sounds insane like something from a horror film but one night it was happening my little dog was asleep next to me on the bed and i could clearly see he also was pinned to the bed. And looked terrified as he couldn't understand it, sounds like pure hokum but i suffered this be throughout my twenties.

I've had the sleep paralysis for many years on and off and it is terrifying! The worse experience a demon of some sort was sitting on my chest and talking in a gargly type voice, I thought I was going to die. I thought "Jesus help me" and it disappeared.

I also usually see shadow people or sense someone in the room when it happens.

Re: Ever woken up, but couldn't move a muscle? You're not alone. It's called sleep paralysis and it can be really scary (video)
I was reading about this in a book recently... Some things I read or learned:

- the brain/mind disconnects from the body during the sleep/dream state to prevent you from physically acting out your dreams and hurting yourself

- 'sleep paralysis' occurs when your body is still 'asleep' but your mind is 'awake'. (body asleep / mind awake)

- it's more likely to occur in individuals who suffer from sleep apnea

- it's more likely to occur when you sleep on your back (as opposed to your stomach)

- it's more likely to occur if you go to sleep on an empty stomach or deprive yourself of the normal or necessary amount of sleep

- when you suffer 'sleep paralysis' apparently it's easiest to try and move your BIG TOE first to break you from this state. Try and remember that.

- you can lessen the fear associated with these experiences by changing the lighting in your room as the darkness tends to amplify the 'fear' element.

- there is often a pressure type sensation or 'sinking feeling' associated with these experiences.

- this phenomena is often associated or linked to having outer-body-experiences (OBE's)

--------------------------------------------------------

As far as my own thoughts I feel that there's truth to the suggestion that your spirit or an element of your consciousness actually leaves the body during the sleep state (it is said to stay attached via a silvery, etheric type cord). However this does not mean that your body becomes an empty physical vessel. From what I'm reading your body retains an element of your consciousness/mind, but that it's possible for there to be a 'mind-split' type effect and that's what enables an element of your consciousness to separate from the body.

I have had my own sensation of experiencing being outside my body and returning to it from the dream state to affirm for me these assertions. I feel that the alleged 'presence' that people commonly feel (but often do not see) is nothing separate or external to you or anything sinister, but in fact an element of your own consciousness or spirit before it has fully reintegrated to your physical body and restored normal motor/sensory functioning. Just my thoughts/experiences/theories.

I had it often as a child. Scary to say the least. My solution was to try to shake my head. After perfecting this technique, I grew out of S.P. and I haven't had it for 20 years.
