Solar Flare to Produce Spectacular Northern Lights

An Earth-Directed coronal mass ejection (CME) occurred during the early morning hours Friday.

The resulting solar flare was pointed directly at the United States for a duration of nearly two hours, according to Hunter Outten. Outten is a contributing forecaster for the AccuWeather Astronomy page.

"The CME is pretty strong and is coming pretty quick," said Outten. An intense Northern Lights show will cover a large part of the northern U.S.

According to NOAA, the geomagnetic storm that will produce the northern lights will arrive late on Saturday and be a minor storm. The geomagnetic storm on Sunday is rated as moderate. The more intense the storm is, the better chance it will be for the Northern Lights to appear.

"This geomagnetic storm may disrupt communications, such as satellite television and G.P.S. units," said Outten.

Besides interfering with satellite signals, what can this potentially do? I keep seeing posts about this, and I don't even know what exactly is expected here.

So to summarize the OP:

Potential may question mark might, Possible if potential maybe could if question mark.

With a flare, such as an X-flare the danger is obvious. With a CME less so, it all depends on its density and its speed!

This particular one from yesterday is fast moving which would mean to me that it contains far more energy than a slower moving example?!

When it hits it will hit hard and compress our magnetic field, this weakens it making it susceptible to anything else that may follow, like another CME or a faster moving flare!!


The problem is ground currents!

Energy has to go somewhere, normally with less denser CME'S the energy produces the Northern lights but with more energy, such as may be contained in this one tonight it would simply overload our defences causing currents to flow within electricity or telephone cables as these in essence are simply antennas which spread across every continent!

on March 21 Equinox, Earth becomes fully exposed to the center of our Galaxy with the Sun at our side, and no longer blocking us from the center of the galaxy, we can expect more solar flares combined with more energy from the center of our Galaxy.
