Re: Breaking: CHAOS IN CYPRUS; "Thousands" are withdrawing their money; ALERT IN THE SOUTHERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES
While I don't accept this move, let me say that it is much better than:

Bailing out all banks with government money, then fleecing the same money from the taxpayers through taxes and inflation.

This is what YOUR leaders already have done to YOU in the US.

And they took much more than 6.5% of your savings, let me tell you.

The problem is, you don't understand, you don't care and all you do is bitch and whine, instead of actually doing something about it.

If all US Citizens pulled their savings out of the banks, the banks would go bankrupt.

I hope this spreads in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece.
 Quoting: Pathaka

"much better than..."
They can actually do both (and they will).
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 300487

They are already doing both in some occasions.
People pay tax, policy makers, bankers and politicians didn't spend the tax money responsibly.
Now people in Cyprus get to pay again.
If i remember correctly at least in Greece case, and suggested in most austerity plans when countries in the eu first show signs of trouble, are raising taxes for the citizens to get more money.
So.. tax.. plus more tax.. then when your government doesn't spend it right, they'll just take a certain percentage out of each bank account.

On top of that central banks are punching more and more artificial numbers into computers to come up with money to use for bailouts- which will eventually create inflation.. et voila..

this is now in the media in germany and the european union everywhere!!!

Millions of people are commenting that they will get their money out of the banks when they open next week! This is Huge

everyone who has under 100.000 euros in the bank must pay 6,8% to save the banks! if cyprus cant handle that then they do the same in germany italy spain etc..

i think that will be doom for sure next week

aren't you overreacting now? please give some sources to back up your statement.

Coming to a country and bank near you.

If one does it, others will follow since they can see how lucrative this can be for the governments.

EU's Rehn says Cypriot haircut on deposits will not be repeated elsewhere

SURE?????

Rehn said he doesn’t expect an adverse market reaction to the precedent-setting tax on deposits both above and below the insured limit of 100,000 euros.

Asked whether a future EU-mandated bank levy can be categorically ruled out, Rehn said that “it can and there is no concrete case where it should be considered.”

The government of Cyprus will (already has) realized that their plan is faulty because when they go for the money it won't be there. The only solution is to freeze people out of their accounts until the government can steal it's share.

That's so unfair and I bet the governmant knows what each person has in that bank so even withdrawing the money wont help....I suppose the answer here is to withdraw any money from bank accounts and buy a safe to keep it in at home.....

This is a crime against humanity!

They say at a saturday morning, that everyone who has under 100.000 eur in the bank account must pay 7%, they just take the money from people! they didnt even ask or say something about it! they just have frozen those amounts from 6% now!

and people want their money out now before it gets worse!

here in germany too soon they realize that it is better to rescure the money before they freeze the amounts

Doom On
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 35428972

This sets a precedent in the euro crisis and shows that no one is safe with his money, doesn't matter how they'll try to paint this out, it's just a tax or not bla bla, this is an unilateral move that clearly states that your govt can take your money any time they want, 10% today, maybe 40% tomorrow, who knows really. anon
 Quoting: insertfunnyusername

just imagine youre a hard working man to give your family to eat .. and now they just take your money if they need it WTF its about time to react this cant be true
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 35428972

It's a collective punishment if you do this thing without setting some criteria first, like exemption of small deposits, people with low/no income etc. In the livestream i posted before heard about some cases that they had money in the bank just for a day or two to pay bills and stuff, they got a haircut too. Heard about a billionaire that moved money there yesterday and got a haircut of millions, won't do business in Cyprus again in his life. It'll be interesting to see if a bank run in the rest of Europe will be initiated by this move.

Snip:

And the Euro crisis continues elsewhere. As I write, the EU leaders have just decided on a Troika bailout programme for Cyprus, where the banks have been driven to the wall through acting as a conduit for Russian oligarchs’ ‘hot money’ flows. Cyprus’ economic boom prior to the crisis was based entirely on providing a safe haven for illicit Russian funds, laundering them so they could then be sent back into Russia ‘clean’. Cyprus attracted $119.7bn of Russian “investment” in 2011 while itself transferring $129.9bn to Russia the same year, equivalent to more than five times the island’s annual output, according to Global Financial Integrity, a US-based money laundering watchdog. Raymond Baker, GFI’s director, said the amounts reflected “round-tripping” of illicit funds exported from Russia to companies based in Cyprus. The funds then flowed back as legitimate investment.

“I don’t think Cyprus has cleaned up its act. It’s still a centre for disguised entities and for money of suspect origin,” Mr Baker said. “I think the amount of legitimate Russian money coming into Cyprus would be minuscule.” Cypriot banks used these deposits to invest all over the place: in Greek assets (!) and in property all over Europe. Now these assets are worthless and they are bust and yet they must meet their obligations to the Russian depositors. The EU leaders were divided about what to do: they did not want to bail out Russian mafia, but they did not want to set a precedent by reneging on bank debts in case this was used by anti-austerity movements, as in Slovenia, to do the same. Under pressure from the IMF, the EU leaders have decided that the Russian depositors must take a 10% ‘haircut’ on their deposits, so that of the €17bn needed, only €10bn will now come from the Troika. Even so, that is a huge burden for Cypriots, equivalent to 40% of annual GDP. This will be agreed to by Cyprus which has just elected a centre-right president pledged to do so, after throwing out a ‘Communist’ president who was also imposing austerity.
