So you keep your vinegar, and I'll take the gallon of bleach. |
El Tiburon User ID: 28375544 United States 03/25/2013 10:25 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hard to rinse, fumes are not good to breathe, danger of spills and leakage. 100% vodka is better for killing germs. Same goes for apple cider vinegar, 5% solution mix it with water. Kills surface bacteria on contact. No rinsing. Bleach requires rinsing and if the surface is damp, you can't allow food to come in contact with it. Bleach is good for sterilizing water, and that's about it. I am sorry but your information sucks. The OP is talking SHTF here, not which cleaner is greener or which is safer. They asked which cleaning products should they stock. 1. You don't have to rinse bleach, it completely evaporates. Yes the fumes are irritating, so cut it with water before you use it. 2. There is no such thing as 100% Vodka. Not even from Russia, anything you "clean" with vodka will have sugar residue on it. Like that's not going to attract bugs or anything. 3. It's not even been proven that Apple Cider Vinegar kills germs. Seriously, there are a few loose articles and bunch of woo-woo's who talk about the benefits of drinking it. (drink a cup of bleach and tell me how healthy you are, remember we are trying to kill germs here) 4. Bleach does not require rinsing. Just let it dry and it's gone. 5. Yes, Bleach is good for sterilizing water. So to answer the OP's question, If I had to pick one chemical to hoard for SHTF... Bleach. Bar None... If I could pick two... Bleach and Iodine As for Alcohol, I can make Alcohol if I need it. As for Apple Cider Vinegar... I am not trying to remove negative ions from my colon or some shit like that... I am trying to KILL GERMS SO I DON'T GET SICK. One caveat is that Vinegar CAN be added to Bleach to change the ph of the Bleach and make it more effective. Vinegar alone is never recommended as a disinfectant. As far as cleaning in SHTF situation, personal Hygiene is the most important. Secondly will be water, food and food prep hygiene. One thing to remember is that you WILL run out of cleaning products, eventually. So you should slowly reduce the "cleaning" products you use, to get your body to build up its natural immune defenses. This includes; hand sanitizer, antibiotic hand soap, dish detergent and similar products. One must be sensible about this, but we live in a very "clean" environment vs a SHTF environment, so one must prepare accordingly or your immune system will not be able to keep you well. SHTF= Your immune system is going to be shot JUST FROM THE STRESS. 1 Gallon of bleach reduced to a 5% solution is more than enough to clean a average home for a year. If you are stocking up for SHTF, I am pretty sure you can afford $10 for 10 Gallons of bleach. Screw the hippy, save the planet, immune system boosting BS... We're talking SHTF, I don't want to sound rude, but the OP asked a simple question. I am giving him/ her a honest, educated, and proven answer. |
