Here are the facts about the program. It wasn't started by Obama. It started in 1996 as a land-line phone assistance program that was later expanded to include mobile phones in 2008. Obama had nothing to do with it. It's paid for by the 'Universal Service Fund' fee that is added to everyone's phone bill.

If you don't like the program, complain to Congress or the FCC.

yes well perhaps you should recite your spiel to the average obamalama supporter because they think all good things flow from the messiah. they have no idea who covers this shit they just know voting for a certain party keeps the free crap coming....

those of us who ARE INFORMED know when and where it comes from...and more than that WE KNOW WE ARE paying to keep shit in the white house.

Carlos Slim is the man who has made the most money from the Obamaphone. He owns Tracphone. Like the drug dealers the feds supports by fighting legalization, this guy has also been exploiting his own people:

Carlos Slim became the world's richest man—and a favorite of Wall Street investors—by using a stranglehold on Mexico's telephone lines to beat back rivals and generate outsize profits.

Now, that strategy may have reached its limit. After years of vowing to curb Mr. Slim's power in the telephone market, the Mexican government is close to giving itself the legal power to break up his telecommunications giant

The potential change is part of a broad shakeup of telecommunications proposed by President Enrique Peña Nieto on Monday, which aims to create competition in a poor country where people still pay some of the highest rates on telephone bills.

all phones are capable of dialing 911 and that is all these obama phones should be able to do too. anything other than an emergency number is a luxury and if one wants "luxury" then one gets a job and pays for it themselves.

Women's and homeless shelters take old phones for this reason. If it's good enough for battered women and homeless, then it's good enough for welfare users.

My sister in law has one and is constantly on it. Same chick that makes 1K in food stamps for her family. Bro and SIL have jobs, but the money goes to buying "starred corn" aka pot. Rent, food, entertainment...you and I pay for that shit.

had to take a friend to the emergency room yesterday and I sat in the waiting for him to get stitched up. there was a woman in the room too and she had five or six kids with her. while her kids ran wild through the waiting room she sat on her cell laughing it up and totally oblivious to the "no cell phone" signs conspicuous to the rest of us.

I am going to guess that it was an Obama phone because she demanded everything free that wasn't tied down. oh and two of her older kids had cell phones too.

I have one of those free cell phones(permanently disabled unfortunately, and yes i wish i could work), my father uses it as an emergency phone because he's pretty much wheelchair bound and the last thing i want is for him to be unable to get help if needed.

Far too many people have them and don't need them though, one of my former neighbors had one, and they had a well paying jobs, nice people and all but i'm pretty sure they could afford a 10$ tracphone.

those who shouldn't have them but do, and those who abuse the system are the people who have made so many of us angry. not people such as your father who the program was created for and which gives comfort knowing that help is just a phone call away. I am sure that there is no one who would deny him a free phone, but unfortunately there are too many who get this service for free and sell it to make a profit for themselves.
