Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Scientist confirms extinction event asteroid will NOT hit earth *Some follow-up info: And as it turned out, the guy who made these elements used the TLE format but meant for them to be used in reference to the sun rather than earth (even though the TLE format is specific to earth). Here are the results of that: Follow-up video with the re-analysis assuming the TLE's were actually supposed to be heliocentric.
Quoting: Dr. Astro Analysis of the second set of TLE's revealed the April Fool's nature of the joke: ...
Just a thought....
What if the epoch was changed to the mar 25 date. Am I sort of understanding this right?
Does that change anything? Is that how it works?
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23559912 But that's not what it says, at all. I'm running an integration right now with it set to January 1st 2000, since that's the date it seems to indicate if you take it using the same logic used for the first set presented. Quoting: Dr. Astro Ah. Definitely waiting for it! Thx! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23559912 Ha. Ha ha. That's funny, actually. Ok, so the second set misses earth by a bigger margin than the first set (no doubt because whoever tried to construct this probably did so without taking into account the gravity of the planets, relativity, etc - they probably thought this was another impactor orbit) BUT the asteroid does cross earth's orbit at midnight on April 1st, 2013. Cute. Whoever did this at least had a sense of humor. Quoting: Dr. Astro Doom off, Schnitzels for everyone! Last Edited by Astromut on 03/20/2013 09:32 PM |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31653049 The data are the data, and in this case the data are severely fucked up. Now someone suggested I run it as if these "TLE's" were heliocentric instead, which is not what a TLE is supposed to be but ok. I did that and here's the result: Can those be re-ran (so to speak) with an assumption that the orbital elements are using the sun as the center / reference point instead of the earth? Does that change anything. I.e. make it helio centric (is that the right term!) instead of earth centric?
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23559912 Done on the conversion I mentioned, give me a few minutes to reboot into linux to check the result in ORSA. Forgive me if I don't render a whole new video about it though, takes forever on my machine. Quoting: Dr. Astro Aha, that is definitely what was apparently meant by those screwed up TLE's. That does produce an "asteroid" that gets close to earth. At its closest, 15,000 km from earth's center, or a little less than 9000 km from the surface. Still a miss and a fail, but a much closer miss. The date and time of the miss would be 9.755 days prior to the epoch of the elements, in other words, it would have already hit us yesterday if it were going to hit lol. Quoting: Dr. Astro Whoever constructed this hoax tried at least a little harder than I first though, but it's still a badly constructed hoax. |
