It's a given that small undetected asteroids can strike at any time. You shouldn't assure what you can't possibly know. Quoting: ACI don't. You are not a very talented astronomer. You are amassing a collection of failures. Quoting: Astro cunt 1610436 No, I didn't. I said it would miss by 17,205 miles from the surface. [link to www.godlikeproductions.com] I was right to within a few miles. You can confirm that for yourself using astrometric data from the close approach. [link to www.minorplanetcenter.net] JPL's own page shows the nominal distance for that close approach was about 17,198 miles. [link to ssd.jpl.nasa.gov] You are the one amassing a collection of failures here pal. |

That's reached the beyond OK. Time for universal shunning. It works, but too few people have the courage to do it. This guy deserves it. I was watching these exchanges prior to the Russian meteor. I can tell you people were goading (or attempting to goad) Dr. Astro into making over-reaching statements about the incoming meteor. When that didn't work they switched to trying to get him to make overly precise statements. He for example reran his numbers and gave a more precise estimate of passing distance, with an appropriately more emphatic insistence that this thing wasn't going to hit us. Then, like magic (and lets not talk about probability), an uncatalogued meteorite explodes over Russia, with massive amounts of absolutely stunning and terrifying video. I said to myself "Oh shit, Astro's fucked now." He hadn't said anything wrong, he'd been incredibly precise, just like they wanted. Which is why I believe Dr. Astro is going to be dealing with staged attacks from that same group trying to whip up people who were frightened by those Russian videos to attack Dr. Astro as well. Why! Seems strange to spend all that energy on Dr. Astro, right? Perhaps there is something to the phrase "as above, so below." Or more precisely, maybe GLP is like a reflection of "the whole world, writ small". Which is why I suspect TPTB will use some similarly unlikely event/events in the near future to push an anti-science/anti-authority agenda. Ok, that's a lot of analysis, and I haven't had a good track record on feedback for these in-depth posts. What is your take on this Dr. Astro? M.E.H. GLP Effect = Doom watched is Doom averted GLP Side-Effects = It's never as Doomy as it seems and it's never Doomy enough My goal is to become a Tard in as many subjects as possible. The world needs more Generalists. Dedicated practitioner of the Woo arts and researcher of Overunity "science". |

Ok, that's a lot of analysis, and I haven't had a good track record on feedback for these in-depth posts. What is your take on this Dr. Astro? M.E.H. I think the quality of education has been on a downward trajectory for some time, and I don't think that's an accident. Thread: My child received a school manual on how to masterbate on his 8th b-day. It makes people easier to control. Critical thinking has gone out the window. The depth of information taught is puddle deep as well. Just a few weeks ago I was looking in kids books about astronomy from the 1960's that had been collecting dust alongside a large collection of Asimov books. The information in those books was more advanced than some of the things I had seen taught in high school. Of course there was a much greater interest in space back in the 60's, but I still think the depth of information told a story of how far we've fallen as a society. |

It's BS. There is no such thing as an asteroid named "DA2013CL2" - that's not even how provisional asteroid names work. 2013 CL2 is a real asteroid, but there's no "DA" in front of the name. [link to www.minorplanetcenter.net] It's an asteroid that was seen briefly for two days by Pan-STARRS but was lost due to a lack of follow-up observations. It's a main belt asteroid whose orbit is just inside the orbit of mars at perihelion, but nowhere near our orbit (earth MOID of .39 AU). Since it's just a main belt asteroid and not an earth crossing asteroid or near approaching asteroid it's not as high of a priority for follow-up observations and because of that it was lost. Minor planet center doesn't even bother to calculate an orbit for it, but I did using the astrometric data. [link to 2005yu55.jimdo.com] Here's what that orbit looks like (it's the red line): [link to img194.imageshack.us] |
