I foresee a run on all banks in the economically troubled EU nations. If Cyprus is first whose next, Greece, Italy, Spain..?

Once people fear the banks are an agent of the EU they will no longer put their money in EU banks.

Very sneaky of the EU, there is a public holiday in Cyprus tomorrow, so all the banks are closed.
They waited until a long weekend to bring in all these measures, to give them time to prepare for a run on the banks.
They knew they were in trouble long before this weekend.
Very underhanded indeed.

Hmmmm, wonder how all this news will affect how people view their money sitting in banks here,
in this unstable country, which owes a growing debt that can never be paid.

Exactly. Whatever happens now, even if the authorities recede from this threat, people will now know that they can't trust banks/government with their money.

Just last week I was telling my mother and my step-father (who has a substantial investment portfolio and savings) that their money was not safe because, as the public finances ran dry, the government would start grabbing money from people's accounts and pensions etc. They didn't believe me, said I was being 'alarmist and silly'.

Cyprus really is the canary in the mineshaft. After all, now the authorities have done this and a precedent is set, surely they will try the same tactic with all future financial interventions. Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Ireland......

Interesting fact about Cyprus that may have a relevance here: Cyprus is, per square mile, the most heavily militarised nation on the planet. Due to the long-running division of the island the republic of Cyprus maintains a very strong national guard defence force. Most able bodied males have military training, know how to use an assault rifle, and know where they are kept.

If the banks and government think the Cypriots will just say 'OK' to this then they have another thing coming. I predict that it won't just be civilians lining up outside the banks, but rather uniformed and armed Cypriot National Guard troops staging a coup.

The first duty of any military is to protect the people. This is the time for the Cypriot (and Greek, and Spanish) armed forces to stand up and show the banksters and political elite who is really in charge. Get the nooses ready.

I read the very same thing in an article earlier.

I know I would be pretty upset if this were to happen here.

This is outright theft from savers to pay for the irresponsibility of banksters and governments.

The USD will last as long as the petro dollar is around.

If Russia or China dumps it, then the USD will die. Within days the dollar would lose its value and throw the US in total chaos and civil war. But not until then.

The only thing stopping China and Russia to do that is fear of nuclear war in the aftermath of USAs destruction.

Yes, they do set a good economical example to the rest of Europe, don't they?

Not only did the economical collapse allow for proper refinancing, but they also recovered there reputation.

well OP I learned something new today

canary in a coal mine

Etymology
An allusion to caged canaries mining workers would carry down into the tunnels with them. If dangerous gases such as methane or carbon monoxide leaked into the mine-shaft, the gases would kill the canary before killing the miners.

Noun
canary in a coal mine (plural canaries in a coal mine)

(idiomatic) Something whose sensitivity to adverse conditions makes it a useful early indicator of such conditions; something which warns of the coming of greater danger or trouble by a deterioration in its health or welfare.
