You can survive with little preps if you know how. Get a good knife, a tarp, some para cord, sleeping bag, good sized rucksack, a fire steel and a survival straw. Tonnes of info out there. Watch Ray Mears on you tube also. Learn how to aquire/filter water. Learn how to build shelter. Learn what plants are edible in your area. Learn how to trap for food. Try to avoid bugging out if possible. Store food. Store water. Lots of tutorials on youtube, but be weary, as theres lots of BS too. I find myself watching several videos on the same subject to filter out the BS. Good luck. Hope you don't need it. ;-) |

Ray Mears FTW! Bear Grylls would get your ass killed faster then doom could. This!!! He's in it for the money and fame. He's reckless. Ray Mears, not cocky. Quiet and sensible. Lots of good info from him. |

Do not use old milk jugs!!! No matter how much you wash and rinse, you can't get rid of the bacteria. Go to ebay. Collapsable camping water receptacles are pretty cheap. Use the clorox for storage. 1teaspoon per 5litres of water. Do not drink for 24hours. |

You would be surprised at the knives available at garage sales. a 45 or 9 is nice but you can carry a .22 and a thousand rounds of ammo all day long if you have to bug out. think about it. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 36203947 United States 03/17/2013 04:12 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Learn how to garden, start with organic seeds and learn how to save seeds. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1034800 If you don't have any land, see if there is a community garden nearby. Move to a climate that is easy to grow food in and a place where crime is low Expanding on the best idea you've been given which is highlighted above: Pack up all your gear and drive to a location that is at good elevation (2000 feet above sea level or higher) and is very rural (preferably a farming community). Get a cheap room at the local YMCA (or YWCA if you are female) or boarding house in the nearest small town. Check the newspaper and the ads for help wanted on the community bulletin board at the grocery store for a job as a night manager at an apartment complex (these jobs usually include free apartment rent and free water as part of the pay). Get the job as night manager and move out of the room at the YMCA. Again check the want ads for anyone needing a ranch/farm hand with little or no experience required - room and meals included. Get the job as a ranch/farm hand, quit your job at the apartment complex and move your things to the bunkhouse at the ranch/farm. Save as much of your pay as possible for two months (at $10 per hour your savings should total about $2,000). Look for a ten acre parcel of land that is zoned as a farm and the seller will sell 2 of the acres for cash and then enter into a land contract with you directly to pay for the other 8 acres within a year's time. The land must have water on it (for instance a creek or stream; however, it is preferable to have a well or a spring). There should also be trees on at least one-quarter of the acreage and it is a plus if there is some sort of an existing structure on the land like a barn, shed, or garage. Purchase the first 2 acres of the land outright. Continue working on the ranch/farm and saving money at a rate of $1,000 per month. After 3 months, purchase a used mobile home and set it up with a septic system and a wood-burning stove on your 2 acre parcel of land. Put in a garden (20 by 40 feet) near your mobile home. Over the next 8 months, continue working on the ranch/farm and after you start harvesting fruits (strawberries, etc.) and vegetables (potatoes, corn, beans, bell peppers, tomatoes, etc.), can the harvested vegetables, make jam out of the strawberries, and make a profit at the local Farmer's Market on the fruit and vegetables that you do not need for yourself. Pay off the amount owed on the other 8 acres of your land on the land contract. Stop working on the ranch/farm and start working for yourself. Obtain some bees and begin keeping your own hives. Buy (or trade for) two Jersey milk cows, and some chickens (get different kinds of chickens so their eggs will be different colors). You can store the honey your hives produce for a long period of time. This will be your sugar source (a good alternate or additional sugar source is to raise a crop of sugar beets). Use half of the milk and sell the other half to pay for the feed the cows need to eat. Use one third of the eggs and sell the rest in dozens to your neighbors. People pay top dollar for eggs that are all different shades of brown. Have electricity installed to your mobile home, put in a cistern (back up water supply that is stored rain water), put in various fruit and nut trees, a corn field, and a hay pasture. Purchase calves in the spring and sell them for three times what you paid for them in the fall. Their feed is primarily what they graze on in your hay pasture. for ten head of cattle your profit in one season would be about $6,700. Any hay in your field(s) that your cattle don't need can be marketed too. Now, you work for yourself and you are self-sufficient. Upgrade your place to using solar electricity and you are now off the grid and self sufficient. You will need to defend yourself and your place, so you must decide how it is best to do that. BTW, throughout this year (described above) keep your money out of the banks and pay for everything in cash as you go. Good luck (we are all going to need it). |

Carbs from the rice, protien and vitamins from the beans. As a green, you can pick and eat wild dandelions that grow everywhere. Those 3 things and water will keep you going indefinately. |

You can buy raw rolled oats in a 50# bag for about $18. Cracked corn for about $12 (make corn meal, mush, etc.) Horrid to eat, MUST be cooked to allow digestion, but its better than starving to death when EVERYONE has NOTHING, except you. |

They'd leave their place with just a knife and live well. Now the stream water isn't drinkable and the stream don't have much salmon, but there's something to be said about learning these skills. Whether its for doom or fun. When you don't have money, you have to be creative, and that itself is a skill. Shelter? How about a tarp in lieu of a tent. Water? How about building a filter instead of stockpiling water jugs. Food? How about making a bow and learning to use it. Heat? Rocket stoves are cheap and pretty damn cool. Enjoy the fun of learning something :) Hq okc |
