I think at the moment they only give them to people who are in occupational risk. For example, the vets and vet techs i worked with are all vaccinated, and so am I due to a possible (at the time) exposure. The dog that bit me was showing possible signs of rabies, but when he died, no virus was found in his neural tissue. Because the effective window for taking the vaccine is 10 days, I didn't wait until the dog died (owners refused to put the dog down, against the law to euthanize without permission) to get my rounds. It was an extremely minor wound, but even the tiniest nick transmits the virus as long as saliva makes contact. Even though the poor dog turned out to be negative, he ended up dying... And now I'm immune for a few years.

I remember hearing a while back that the govt was dropping rabies vaccines for animals to eat and thought how crazy is that. They're spreading rabies through this and it may mutate into the Zombie virus.Just my 2 cents.bump

...have not had one dog or cat I've helped vaccinate come back with rabies. The only problem I have with this is that vaccines are extremely species specific... So unless they have a raccoon, possum, fruit bat, cat dog universal mammal edible protect-all, it seems like a waste of money.... Then theres the issues of making sure the animals eat the dang thing...Must look this up!

A lot of counties in the U.S. are holding free rabies clinics for pets in the month of April. You can look up to see which ones are near by.

As far as the vaccine tabs they started using them back in 1990. We never use to have a large rabies problem in the U.S. until they started dropping them and now I believe they have stopped dropping the tabs due to budget cuts. So it is possible that there are hundreds of infected animals just roaming around right now. It can take weeks to incubate as you probably know so it is definitely a good idea to stay away from wild animals until the fall season.

excerpt: Oral rabies vaccination (ORV) has been in use in the United States since 1990, in Canada since 1985 and in Europe since 1980. Currently there are 16 states distributing oral vaccines for raccoons in the U.S., while Texas distributes baits for gray fox and coyote.
