The Uncertain Fate of the Government’s Last 50 Medical-Research Chimps

Animal activists and some scientists think doing invasive medical research on chimpanzees is wrong. “Our culture has moved beyond this,” said anthropologist Daniel Povinelli of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, who studies chimpanzee cognition. “Chimps are too close to us to turn around and do experiments on them.”

How I wish Daniel Povinelli was right, that our culture has moved beyond this.

Thank you for the video, OP. So touching, yet so heartbreaking.

Like the fact that we test shampoo on animals just so our women can have a bit more volume and shine in their hair?
We were meant to live for so much more, have we lost ourselves?

hf Thanks for commenting, Chrit. Think I'll karma pin this. All the money threads pinned but it's a sad fact that all the money in the world can't buy human decency or kindness.

Pretty cool, I wish I had a billion dollars and I would spend it for habitats like that and help some of these animals out.

I wonder how we will feel when we are released from our cages of flesh?

damned

Yeah, really though what is the wild but an even bigger cage? I agree being in a completely natural undisturbed area is ideal, but this is a huge step. And frankly, after so much time spent cooped up and poked and prodded, it's probably about as much freedom as most can handle atm.

I love these vids, gives me hope!

Re: Laboratory chimps caged for 30 years get released and see the sky fot the first time
there's a reason that chimpanzees are the preferred test subject when studying anything from birth defects & toxicology to viral strains & vaccinations.

depending on the source referenced, chimp DNA is 96-99% the same as human DNA.

since it would be completely immoral, illegal, & unethical to use human test subjects... ( sheep) ...... the chimpanzee becomes the human guinea pigs.

I've researched this topic extensively, and because of what I've found....I've often wondered who the ~real~ savages are in our society.

hint: it's not the animals

Poor things would need a lot of rehab to be released into the wild, especially at their age and depending on what they were tested with. They test HIV with some of them and could put the wild ones at risk by spreading whatever our .gov decided to infect them with.

They probably also have "learned helplessness" and would be at a disadvantage in so many ways. Should have never been confined and used for research in the first place. 8(

Nothing ever good enough for the GLPee blue name 1 percenters. Perhaps you preferred the alternative. The smugness of the self proclaimed GLPee elite comes shinning through again. I really hope you're never confined to a crate in your lifetime. Should that day come and then the day of your release, I'll be happy for you anyway and keep any pissy comments to myself.
