Keep hating!
 Quoting: DontBeAfraidEVER

Oh right because wanting global worldwide comms that's independent of the current system is HATING!??!

AHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH KEEP MAKING ME FUCKING LAUGH.

 Quoting: Mister Obvious

Why didnt you respond to what i wrote and why did you take only the last sentence i wrote and responded to that?

With hating i mean that people like you, who go around angry, and diss other people in the same movement is really whats holding us back. We argue among ourselves, when we should raise our angers towards the ''enemy'', and not our friends.

And if you really dont think we humans can communicate without the internet, then i really dont know what to say.

What do you think we did before the internet came?

What do you think would be best?

100 people meeting up in real life discussing problems or 100 people meeting up in a chatroom?

Dont you see the difference?

we need organic and biological modules. Feed them good and in return will deliver vast amounts of knowledge. Tortoise shell hubs have great but tend to be slow. In all seriousness though this is a great idea

As long as this website continues to use it's content to secure profit, it is part of the pervasive problem pandering non-philanthropic usage of resources you are portraying as wanting to fix.

It's all free.

What a fabrication you're trying to spin here...

So odd you would stand in the face of fact and try to make up lies.

No, our DB is free, and it is uncensored...

So feel free to do as I have done and spend thousands of hours of your life saving it.

Putting ALL our eggs in one basket and then pampering our asses with fancy lotions and TOTALLY IGNORING THE DISASTER that will come of this, BECAUSE OF OUR DEPENDENCE AND IGNORANCE.

We can't tolerate this anymore...

I dont think you would call me a sheep if you and me met in real life.

Thats the main problem here.

There is no real connection online, its so ''distant'', but in real life it would be different. When we start solving our problems outside of the internet instead of online then we will start to see change. And REAL unity!

We had all the info we need for a LONG time! This world has been proven crazy a million times. We dont need more proof.

We need people to log the fuck off internet and starting acting their belives in the real world.

"What we need is a plan B... there is no plan B right now, there's no clear backup system that we very carefully kept to be independent of the internet . . . what we need is something that doesn't necessarily have the performance of the internet . . . this doesn't need to be a multi-billion dollar government project. It's actually relatively simple to do technically because it can use existing fibers that are in the ground, existing wireless infrastructure. It's basically a matter of deciding to do it."

Thread: Thoughts & Theories: A New Internet

What do you mean by the internet 'crashing'? The internet is just a bunch of networks connected by mpls and other border routing protocols. If the internet 'crashes' as you say, the ONLY way that could happen is a natural disaster large enough to wipe out all the computer networks connected together by these larger networks (in which case it really doesn't matter), or some weird ass thing our solar system does to us and fucks up how electricity works, or most likely, TPTB will take it down intentionally, but then blame it on something else. And then of course come up with a solution.

As to the idea of staying in contact with all these faceless people that everyone here has become accustomed to... well in absence of internet, you better go meet your neighbors and plan your survival locally.

Hey thanks so much, that means a lot to me!!!

I love Nikola Tesla and his work, and look over his writings (precious few) and patents a lot...

And generally think about how horrific it is that the world is in this current state... wires... unnecessary machinery...

And who knows what other amazing things humans can be doing if the knowledge had been utilized.

If anybody out there is unfamiliar with Nikola Tesla, and what his work and journey really was, there are some good films on YouTube... here are a few links starting with my favorite:

Web crash!!! Serious ZOMBIE apocalypse!!! I shit you not. People will flip the fuck out!!!!!
 Quoting: Chip

Look at hurricane sandy and the gas "shortage"

Had to bring in bring in the national guard to gas stations to keep people from knife fighting because they couldnt wait in turn...

The masses cannot act civil in small scale disaster scenarios...

Yes i know Hurricane Sandy was a pretty big event... That messed up the lives of a LOT of people... But its small scale compared global SHTF...

If people cant behave during hurricane situations...

Imagine the panic of widespread doom...

Glad i live very remote and know how to use a "cross bow" wink

And what MO is saying is correct...

Imagine this... Tomorrow...
A worst case scenario unfolds...

Our civilization is gone... Never will be again! (unless...)

There is 7 billion assholes on Earth...

Fuck it, lets say 3 billion die during whatever in the fuck just brought everything to a screeching halt...

Well after 10 years...out of the 4 billion thats left...
Surely the assholes would have killed each other off... Or died in the intial event... The people thats left are the rebuilders...

Lets say 1 billion rig up generators... Pedal bikes, solar panels, wind mills, whatever...

Well lets guess say i am 1 of that billion...

I know a decent amount of shit.

But i dont know it all... No one does!

If i got a problem and cant figure it out... It would be nice to have a way to access some form of system that puts me in contact with the other billion...

Surely out of the collective... I can solve my problem...

Surely we can rebuild the future... We can tackle the issues as a whole... Not just a small community... But as a planet!

The internet is the greatest invention of mankind.

The ability to type this message and have it exposed to a countless amount of people is priceless! Its something worth preserving.

Imagine the shit that could have been figured out 1000 years ago if those folks had the internet...

I've been using retroshare for this. I don't know if it's a true backup plan but it has file sharing capabilities, along with chat, and forums of a type. Sort of like usenet.

It's open source, and decentralized.

According to Mr. Hillis, it is not that hard a problem to build a backup system.

He mentions it's hard to get people focused on plan B when plan A seems to be working so well.

So the whole point is to get people to truly see how vulnerable the system really and how important it is to have a plan B.

Vint Cerf was in the audience when Mr. Hillis was speaking.

He gave the following response and posed the question, "What can I do to create a communication environment that is even better than the internet?"

Quantum communication?

Vint Cerf: Actually, the Internet's going to be just fine

Let´s take reality as our backup then

charlie
 Quoting: Artaius San

The reality is if we lose 'instant contact' with one-another then we have no real way to warn, or cooperate with others due to the impending threat, perhaps related to the fall of the net.

Wifi and bluetooth are a great way to rig up networking, locally. Using radio like CB or HAM we can transmit data packets in a way akin to dial-up. We could use this method to link the networks, if there was a coordinated effort. I rather enjoy simple command line interactions. It feels more personal for some reason. Hehehe, and it's great for the Matrix fan in all of us. I'm currently working on getting a BBS type system running on my android phone and I can broadcast a wifi AP for a decent distance. Perhaps this method could be used.

If the net is down because of electricity issues then it's a whole other ballgame, however.

Yes, this is an excellent post with great points...

But I am not really concerned with global comms as a means of 'warning people' or 'doom' or any such thing...

The knowledge of these things is only a side effect of the original aspect... GLOBAL COMMUNICATION UNINHIBITED.

HAM networks, CB...and the old BBS systems.

Most people aware of what is going on have already planned for these options.
 Quoting: Useless Cookie Eater

With HAM radios, 100watts of power (a light bulb), TNC and a little knowledge you can easily communicate with anyone around the world using voice or data packets

There are even free satellites in orbit that you can bounce voice and data off of using HAM gear. ISS has relay and HAM comm gear open for public use
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1010412

+1 for HAM Radio communication, packet in VHF for local, and all the various digital modes for HF for Global comms, even good old CW (Morse Code) at high speed works pretty well.
