Why do so many psych ward patients think they are jesus?

is there something we have not been told growing up?

Delusional, want to be important and have attention.
Jesus seems pretty important and attention worthy, especially Jesus in the flesh - no wonder so many of them think they're Jesus.

but where does this delusion stem from?

i mean, people really believe they are jesus.

There is a state where the veil starts to move aside and people begin to see the part of them that is more than the little self. This larger self is euphoric and expansive. So much so that it must be more than "you" i.e. you must now be God to have this happen... therefore I think I am God/Jesus etc...

I don't know, I mean, Jesus is such an important cultural icon that people easily attach themselves to the figure known as Jesus, since it's such a lofty claim. I'm JESUS CHRIST!!!

Isn't that equivalent to the age old, "I'm God" delusion

As one starts believing it more events take place that seem to confirm its validity. Cascade effect, slippery slope.

But yet, have you ever tried talking with one of these people, putting aside your preconceptions and listening from one human being to another? Jesus IS supposed to return with a new name, on a cloud (aka in the flesh). There are always crazies, but sometimes one's gotta wonder how much of the craziness derives on one's own end.

Jesus would not be known without His disciples, and those who truly listened and believed in His word.

My Uncle told me the Sun was Jesus after he was diagnosed with Dementia. I do agree that the Sun brings life to earth. He was the first person outside of GLP that seemed to have a open mind even though he was no longer fit in with society.

Wow that is interesting Amy... I would have to agree with his conceptualization although I would reverse the order in which you communicated it and say that Jesus was the SUN, or the sun anthropomorphized (personified). Reminds me of this video I saw (which has awesome music by the way):
