Anonymous Coward User ID: 815535 United States 03/18/2013 07:01 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yesterday it's up to 10 acres. Apparently a burp Sunday morning caused an entire acre of land to fall off. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2271438 [link to www.examiner.com] Today it's 12 acres. [link to www.goerie.com] If this continues it's going to swallow up all of Louisiana. They've hired specialists from all over the world to figure this out and nobody can. I recently read a scientific presentation on this (link is on GLP somewhere) and the experts say what's happening is unprecedented. They're winging it. Maybe it'll swallow up the entire world. |

Now it's becoming impossible to remedy. You have to saturate the water with salt so that no more can dissolve in it. This will prevent the salt dome from further dissolving into the water. Then you fill that fucker in with salt and cover it with dirt. When the remaining water evaporates, the salt will recrystallized the dome. Problem solved, would probably cost around 15 million to accomplish. But since that would cost money, the poor people are fucked. |

Just not a good place to be in What matters is the amount of water on top of the dome. When it rains, the waters salinity will decrease, allowing more of the dome to dissolve into the water until equilibrium is reached (as much salt is crystallizing out of the water, as is dissolving into the water). We don't know the condition of the dome, where it is thinnest is the highest concern, but it's easy (well not really, but doing something is better than doing nothing at all and just waiting for the dome to be breached) to back up dump truck loads of salt to keep the salinity as high as possible. While my idea should work, the real world usually dictates otherwise, this would buy time for the people to get the hell out of there, and that is the least the bastards that caused this can do. |

I believe they were working on filling it but the problem is they had to suspend work because of all the seismic activity and methane bubbling. Also, every time they thought they were making progress another portion would collapse so this thing is changing every day. Not clear if they have resumed work but it's clear this situation is getting worse and out of control. |
