Re: Breaking: Several Marines Killed At Military Depot (Ammunition Storage) Explosion In Nevada
Do they always go firing huge ammunitions at 10pm at night on Mondays?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11591025

We train 24/7...but especially at night.

There are several ways that this could have happened. If it exploded in the barrel, then it was a "cook off". What is surprising is that it didn't go down range...I've seen many cook offs and they usually just result in the firing of a round before you're ready.

Another option is what is called a "short round". It's when the increments get wet, or something fouls the barrel enough to cause the round to not go as far as intended. The round exits the barrel, goes a few meters in front of the gun and impacts.

Another option that comes to mind, especially with the 60mm, is firing the round straight up, or nearly straight up. The round would go up several hundred feet, then drop right back down on top of the squad. If it was at night, it would be extremely hard to see the trajectory of the round. It could have been something similar to this with a round fired from another gun nearby the Marines that were killed.

I know that I served for nearly a decade, all of that time spent in the war or in the field training. But to be honest, between the lack of pertinent training in the beginning of the war the Marines and National Guard /reservists were more dangerous than the al-Qaeda could ever hope to be.

That's why the Marines were training at an Army facility. The Corps is all about cranking out zombie war machines in pretty outfits instead of investing in training. I suppose not their fault since they are bastard children of the navy. We were constantly training Marines on Ft Bragg when I was stationed there. I talked to guys who had been in for years and never seen a pair of night vision goggles or pop up targets. I was floored at the lack of training.

Again nothing against you Devil Dogs, just the way it is.

Not really. Marines die in training pretty often...sad but true. It sounds to me, as a former Marine mortarman, like a training accident.

You're high. A Marine infantry battalion is head and shoulders above any army infantry battalion. The closest the army has are ranger battalions. We may not have the nice toys, but our level of individual tactical training is unmatched. Out of respect for the Marines that lost their lives, I will not further debate this with you in this thread...start another if you like. But, you must be freaking high.

An official at the Hawthorne Army Depot in Nevada says an explosion has occurred during a Marine Corps training exercise.
Russ Collier told KRNV-TV in Reno that the explosion Monday night was an accident unrelated to the ammunition that is stored at the military facility near the small desert community of Hawthorne, about 140 miles southeast of Reno.

There were conflicting reports about what happened. According to one account, a 60-millimeter mortar shell exploded in a tube as Marines were preparing to fire it. Another account said that the shell exploded as Marines were picking it up to load it.

You have absolutely no clue what you are talking about, and you were wrong to speak ill of the Marine Corps and the way they train. You used one experience (most likely biased) with some Marines at Fort Bragg to generalize about the rest of the Marine Corps. You are using an incident like this to grandstand about how great you are and how poorly trained the Marines are, yet you ignore virtually hundreds of examples where Marines have surpassed the Army in both training and proficiency.

You are jealous of the Marine Corps, your post reeks of it. Good thing there are better men than you defending us...

What battalion(s) were you with?

I was with Weapons Co. 1/8...1/2, and 2/6. 81s Platoon all three battalions...did time with Heavy Guns 2/6. Also taught at SOI and SOTG...east coast. You say platoon "leader"...officer I presume?

These Marines were firing a 60mm...not 81. Did it say in one of the articles that it was an HE round? Could have been WP I guess.

Edit: Also...having been close to WP a time or two...a close detonation would result in just as many deaths as HE.
