BIRS GEO-2 is the second satellite in the Space-Based Infrared System, SBIRS, a US Air Force program to detect ballistic missile launches and provide the United States with advance warning of potential nuclear attacks.

Why are you using a foreign source rather than say a press release.
So much gets lost in translation.

You think they suddenly decided to launch this bird?

A March launch was announced in January when Lockheed Martin delivered the bird at the Cape, the satellite itself was announced years ago.
(Yes, it can take months to mate a satellite with the launcher.)

It takes a real long time from Congress okaying the expenditure to having a working space asset.
These things cost (at least) hundreds of millions, not even the USAF can pull one out a closet whenever they feel like it.

Only the NRO can do that...
They always have spares.
Last year they donated two surplus (and probably outdated) Hubble Class space telescopes (without the optics) to NASA.

I am using a foreign source rather than say a U.S.press release because there wasnt anything about this launch in the American Headlines.
