That was just to answer the question if they have any plans to stop an incoming asteroid, meaning if something is heading for earth in three weeks time, they have zero ability to stop it from hitting the earth hence the word PRAY was used.

It did not categorically state that there is indeed an incoming asteroid in three weeks time.

Don't forget to read the first part of that statement...
"From the information we have, we don't know of an asteroid that will threaten the population of the United States,"

Based on the information that they have, no asteroid will be a threat to the US, but they are just basing that on what they know and as what happened in Russia, they cannot monitor every asteroid that may be heading towards earth.

Doom is still out there, but it doesn't necessarily mean it is coming in three weeks time.
