Re: Cyprus banks may never open again
They need to post all sorts of crap in reliable mainstream news to persuade everybody to not withdraw paper money or it will be pure "out of paper" crisis in first place. They have one week now to for brainwash everybody to keep money in banks.
Do not believe? Auto-translate their local 'news'.

This is the first time I have ever started a thread, let alone have one pinned. Isn't there a way to change the subject line? Thanks for any help in advance.

At this afternoon’s FOMC Press Conference in response to a question posed as to whether the Fed would ever impose depositor haircuts as was attempted this week in Cyprus, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke confirmed that Cyprus style depositor haircut wealth confiscation is possible here in the US if the Cyprus event or another event in Europe were to become contagious and the people lose confidence in the US dollar.

Not really surprising at all. They believe that the money we earn is just a loan from the central bank. They view our currency as their property. From their twisted perspective they have every right to confiscate their property.

We are slaves.

b]Is Cyprus deposit levy the first sign of widespread wealth tax?

"The idea of a one-off wealth tax, however, is not new. Several research reports have pointed in recent years to the fact that the desperate need for funding in the public sector could - and probably will - eventually lead to confiscation of wealth in a monumental scale. Boston Consulting Group suggested in a recent report that about 29 percent of ALL private wealth, not just deposits, will eventually be likely to be confiscated to cover the debts already incurred. What do you all think happened a JP Morgan Chase with the zero account balances?
it was an algorithm that was being tested, but wasn't supposed to be on actual customer accounts yet. their test environment went live and that was the "internal issue" they had.

more info:

"I just listened to the speech live and while this paraphrase is not an exact quote it cuts through the Bernanke blather to the real substance of what was said. For those who didn’t hear it themselves the reporter asks if it would be possible do they have the power could they or would they tax deposits and Bernanke nervously rambles a response about how they are a really tiny country we are big so it would be “extremely unlikely” in the united states plus the fdic is proud of never losing a dime and the american response to the crisis was to expand deposit insurance blah blah blah. The takeaway here is that his statement confirms that yes we have the power, we could, and we would potentially tax bank deposits if deemed necessary. Kind of like the Obama administration’s tacit admission that they believe they have the power to kill anyone in the United States but it is “unlikely” they would ever do that so don’t worry. "

IOW, the tax will be 100% rather than 9.9% or 6.75%.

The signal this sends to Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal will be for some depositors to start puling their money out.

Banks only keep a very small percentage of their deposits on hand. Let's say 5% or 10%. IOW, if depositors ask for 15% to 20%, the banks don't have it!

The next week or two will tell us a lot.

There don´t seem to be many pleasant solutions left. They should have watched over their banking system a little more carefully.

The issue is not whether the money comes from Russia or elsewhere. It´s what they did with the money. To varied degrees, the same could probably be said of most countries in Europe, though.
