The Dunning-Kruger effect is in full swing in this thread.

I'd be willing to bet that about 90 percent of the 50 percent who voted themselves into the 90th percentile don't even know what that means. Thereby providing a perfect example.
 Quoting: DrKnow 34533941

And I'm betting that 100% of posters that made replies like this score VERY low when it comes to reading comprehension.

Try reading the opening post again.
 Quoting: Rev StarGazer

Proving the point yet again. My reading comprehension is fine. I think you ought to reread the OP.

If I rate myself against 100 people I know, or the mass of drooling idiots that surround me on all sides, or the billions of morons in the world, I know I am still in the 99th percentile. ONE of my brothers is the only person I know who is smarter than me. ONE of them.

I've met people smarter than me. A few times. I'm smart enough to be able to realize it immediately. Unlike, say, YOU.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34533941

Ditto. LOL!

This is what distinguishes us from the morons - the ability to appreciate greatness, to understand what we're seeing, reading and hearing.

Re: How smart are you?
pinned!

Well, upon seeing your thread title, I figured I was not going to be so presumptuous as to rank myself 'according' to my own perceptions of myself'; then I read the body of your comment:

"Think about 100 people in your life.
Parents, friends, co-workers, extended family, teachers, stc.
Rank yourself"

It has to be 90%. I do not know ONE person who makes any effort to find out the why's and how's of the world and systems they 'live' in.

Everyone I know seems to 'just be' content with going about their own business.

A surprising number of them NEVER read newspapers, or even watch news broadcasts, of any kind.

"What do you mean 'stop eating seafood?' Fukushima? What's that? Corexit? What?"

"GMO's?"

"You better stop going to that website. Everyone KNOWS that flouride is essential to good dental health! Oh, man!"

"Where do you get this stuff? The BIBLE specifically states that..."

"Sigh Op? Wha?"

These are just milder examples.

Those that DO have some interest in "being well informed" tend to start bitching and moaning when the news outlets they watch tell them it's time to bitch and moan. It is akin to a 'pavlov's dog' response.

They listen = they believe.

They would NEVER consider trying to research the possibility that what they are hearing could be some degree of propaganda, or, guided acceptance.

This goes for ANY and ALL news outlets. There's no thought to 'read between the lines.' No effort to dig deeper.

====

So, based upon your parameters...at least 90%

GLP rules!!!

If you dismiss people because they believe the Bible you have just failed at life. I hope you rated your self sufficiently low on the poll, honey. iamwith

I apologize for offending your sensibilities. My choice of examples probably should not have included a reference to the Good Book.

I admit that I am not perfect, and, I thank you for pointing this out to me.

My response was meant as an example of three people I know who consistently cite Bible text as the only law to be followed.

In one such conversation, "an eye for an eye" was quoted when we were discussing violence in society, trying to convince me that 'getting even' with those who hurt us is a perfectly acceptable way to settle scores, no matter the situation. To me, this does not seem Christlike.

In an attempt to improve me, and hopefully help me become worthy of entering God's Kingdom, one told me to read Deuteronomy to find out what laws God has given us. I did read it, and quite frankly, I was horrified by many of the 'laws' found in that book.

It's just not my path; to each his own.

----------------

I do not 'dismiss' them; I love them. One is my mother, one my sister, another a childhood friend...I just try to avoid conversations that invariably find them chastising me and damning my soul hell because I NOT TO BELIEVE what they know to be THE ONLY PATH to God's Kingdom.

Mind you, I have led a moral lifestyle, have never been in trouble with the law, with drinking, with drugs. I have raised two amazing young men. I live a peaceful life. Why they feel the need to preach to me at every turn is a mystery.

What I cannot understand is, although they all claim Jesus as their Savior, the two tenets that seem to fail them is Love Thy Neighbor, and, Do Unto Others...at least when it comes to me.

===========

One of the things that I have learned by reading this thread is that I may have mistakenly considered that 'being aware' is a trait that somehow makes one person smarter than another. I guess this could be considered faulty thinking.

Still, it is my personal opinion that 'being aware' and having an open mind is really a smart way to live one's life.

my apologies, once again.

^90--Not bragging; I just don't focus on trivial BS. I am diligantly trying to relearn all the things I was never taught. Trying to erase all the bs promulgated from an early age is tedious.
 Quoting: UseLessRepEATER

Now see, you're in trouble right off the bat. How do you RElearn that which you never knew.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 35695643

Good catch; I responded in haste. I am attempting to educate myself about things I was never informed about. At the same time; I am attempting to rewrite over all the BS I was programmed to think was the gospel.
