That is exactly what they are doing right this moment, in a cash society.
Label it "cashless" all you want, the end result is the same so long as the value of your savings is denominated in a 1st world currency.

A cashless society is exactly the same as a cash society, by today's standards. "Money in your pocket" is and will always be represented by your physical assets, not how many paper "bills" are in your wallet. For instance. You raise the subject of hookers. Sure in a plastic society you can't just whip out your wallet to pay, but do you think a good hooker is going to turn their back on a gold ring? A diamond? A car? Anything of value? Cash =/= Plastic
