Rather than, say...using the "proof" to get her into rehab and counseling to sort out her acting out issues and see if the family unit was salvageable. Rather than say, giving up the road job to be more present in his kids lives and his wife's life. Rather than helping with some of the burden of daily life of home and children instead of just congratulating himself with a pat on the back for sending a paycheck.

Her side: She begged him to get off the road and come home and help take care of the family. She knew she was cracking under the pressure. She was overwhelmed and repeatedly told him so. Not only did he not care about that, he called her an ungrateful witch for not caring more about nice cars and the other material possessions he could provide by being on the road. How dare she be more interested in things like shared home life, shared child rearing, nightly companionship and building emotional closeness. How dare she want her children to have a father to come home to at night. A father to show up to the parent teacher conferences and the school play.

He controlled the purse strings and criticized the smallest expenditures from afar, but wouldn't let her put the kids in daycare to make any of her own money. When he came home, he expected perfection. Because he wasn't around, any acting out the kids did..was all her fault. How could it not be? It couldn't be his fault if the kids acted up, since he wasn't around to Lead Them. An absentee father who sends home a paycheck but expects the returns that a 'present' father & husband receives? She had to hire out home repairs, since the little time her husband showed up, he expected only to "rest". He deserved to rest by gosh, after all, he was the breadwinner. In fact, he expected those children to be polished and quiet when he was home so he could rest up enough to abandon them again. He also expected the warm fuzzies from his wife when he graced her with his presence. His impatience with unshaven legs while she supervised homework, baths, soccer games, and bedtimes was evidenced by the sneer on his face when she appeared in her yoga pants and tshirt for bed, too tired and too resentful to muster up glamour and a teddy for the occasion.

Her friends and family encouraged her to get out of the house more, build a social life. They encouraged her to smoke a little weed or have a glass of wine instead of turning to the pharmaceuticals relaxants the doctors were handing out to the rest of the single moms. One night, after begging her husband in exhaustion.. yet again.. to please come home and help out, as child #1 had chickenpox and child #2 wouldn't sleep through the night, she decided to take up the advice. She through on some jeans and a tshirt, nothing fancy, and just went to meet some friends at a pizza and beer joint. It was there she met a man who took advantage of what appeared to be a very lonely and overwhelmed young mother. He knew the type and went in for the kill. She was low hanging fruit to this kind of lech. He offered to do one of the home repairs he'd heard her lamenting about not having done. He spoke to her of her worth and how he accepted her as she was, plain tshirt & mom jeans, no make up..just natural. He said if she were his girl, he'd never leave her alone to fend for herself. He was a swell guy around the kids when he was there doing work, for which one handyman job had become 3. He carried them around the family room piggy back, all giggles... and taught one of them to ride his bike after a little ball playing in the front yard. Some nights he would even stay over so he could get right back on the job in the morning.

Yes, she cheated. She knew it was a horrible mistake even as she made it.

She never was much of a drinker and was a lightweight, but she was never a drunk. She took a few hits of the smoke here and there, medicinally, but was no chronic. She had to keep that on the down low though, as her brother in law was a local cherry top who had an ego bigger than Texas and an axe to grind against women in general. He never did like her, ever since she turned him down to date his brother. He wasn't above using his badge for his own malicious purposes either. Integrity in the law just wasn't a virtue he carried.

One night it all came to an end.

The children are motherless. But yes, they have their material things. Their father as it happens finally came home. But only when swayed by enough money (windfall lawsuit).

I'm sure you will meet one of these kids someday. They will be on the evening news.
