College was helpful but meant very little to them. For serious candidates they were handed a 40 question networking exam. Do poorly on it and forget it. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28870983 yes most colleges are a waste of time 4 or 5 classes of relevance the rest is just waste of time fluff garbage classes Most of what you learn is on the job anyway. I graduated in 1998 with a bachelors in nursing. I learned MOST of what I know today on the job. 4 or 5 of those classes were relevant the rest were a waste of time and just put money in someone's pocket. |

Especially in these times there are a hundred qualified applicants for every job so it is the employers who can do the picking, not you. When you have an established reputation and clientele, then you have some choices. But for the next ten years, it will be a crap-shoot as to who actually hires you. Learn to live with that reality. So take any kind of job and then trade up whenever you can. To the Chemistry guy...science teachers of any sort are always in demand in the high schools. Get a teaching certificate and you will get a job that pays well and is a lot more interesting that what you are doing. That is, assuming you have any teaching talent at all and a tolerance for teenage foolishness. |

He didn't get the job. for IT you need to know the material better than the next guy cause they'll be asking technical questions... |

Here_For_Donuts User ID: 24797199 United States 03/23/2013 10:41 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I started from the bottom ten years ago as a young teenage bus-boy trying to afford Yu-Gi-Oh cards. Recently, I have graduated college as a double major. I've also had excellent internships with notable firms the past year and a half. Quoting: The Vigilante And yet, somehow, something catastrophic happened. I have been turned down to what could have been a pretty easy entry-level position. During the interview, I wore a suit. As a young male in NYC, you're going up against women, gay, minorities, and trust-fund grads. The interview went longer than expected, and it was a damn good enjoyable interview. I was just so flabbergasted when I had the email that said that the position went to another candidate. No man should be left without a job. I find it extremely sad that anyone should be unemployed. But more importantly, I had the experience, and the right attitude. I keep my politics at the door, and I make sure the interview is also enjoyable for my potential employer. I also practice my speech at home, making cue cards and practicing answers. Now, I'm not angry. I do understand that a hiring process is a business, and that hiring a candidate is an investment. I firmly believe they made a mistake. I guess this happens, and is part of reality. I knew finding a job would be hard. But I didn't think it would be this hard. In fact, it's not even hard. It's just a combination of playing wait-and-see mixed with some D&D-dicing. I obviously won't give up. And I will not have 'fun' being unemployed. In fact, that's one of the worst things. I can't even enjoy my videogames since I know it's not me providing for my favorite past-time now. I also know people older than me unemployed, and drinking/smoking and stuff acting like bums. That's not me at all (I'm a straight-edge too). Oh-and college is BS. I should have done a trade school. Seriously. Finance/Economics aren't even requirements, yet Women's Studies are? Ridiculous. Also, I do hope colleges go out of business. Do you know why? Go and Youtube Finance 101. BAM! Everything you need to learn from a semester of school can be taught in a DAY from the Internet. A school's institute holds back innovation instead of competing. Let this be a word of caution for your children since a lot of you are probably a lot older than I am. But then again. I'm sure you all know this. It's GLP-- and this is the smartest forum I've ever been on (I mean it). I don't know what you majored in (I didn't take the time to read your post), but that does not matter. If you're having trouble finding a "traditional" career, then it's time to think outside of the box. One of the greatest science fiction writers of all time, Robert Heinlein, became a writer because he couldn't find work. He had an engineering degree from Annapolis and served as a Navy officer -- by all accounts he should have had no problem finding work. But by the time he was in his early thirties, he was broke, jobless, and nearly homeless. So what did he do? He purchased a copy of Amazing Stories, a magazine he read in his youth. On the back cover there was a contest for unknown writers to submit a short story. Desperate for money (the grand prize was $50, which is almost $1,000 in today's money), he hastily wrote one submitted it. The rest, as they say, is history! My point is that you should try to think OUTSIDE of the box for a career opportunity. You never know what you may find. Am I a guy, or am I a lesbian with a penis? |
