Giant Eagle Wouldn't Let Me Buy Groceries...WTF?!

So my wife and I were having a couple friends over last night for dinner, we were making Mexican food and I had forgotten the tortillas. With 30 minutes left before people were to show up, I ran out to my local Giant Eagle to pick up a few remaining items for the dinner.

When I got to the register I was told that because I did NOT have a Giant Eagle Card, the register would not allow me to scan my items. They proceeded to almost scorn me for not having a membership card, and finally asked if I wanted them to scan their "courtesy card" so I could buy the items. I told them no...to which they said I was out of luck and would have to return the items to the shelves...

We used taco shells instead of tortillas last night.

What in the hell is with this?! Has anyone else had this issue, or know why they would outright refuse me service because I didn't have a Giant Eagle Card? This was definitely a first for me...

Giant eagle is over priced, also I hope you told them to shove the items in there PUSSY

Membership and "advantage" cards are synonyms in my book. For those not familiar with the Giant Eagle grocery chain, I thought it easier to describe it as a membership card.

Giant Eagle is a grocery store chain. They don't have memberships. They have an "advantage" card for savings.

I have a similar problem op, everytime i go out, i feel stalked by a GIANT TEDDYBEAR who doesnt let me pass when i want to get my groceries, or anything else.

I dan only do so by calling the GIANT DOLPHIN who picks me up in a helicopter ufo canoe and lowers me down through the chimney which of course is too big for giant teddybear to enter.

you should have asked for the manager and flashed your cash...the manager would have kissed your ass.

Call their head office and let them know what happened to you...heads will roll...don't worry because that is total bullshit. Don't be afraid about making noise-what happened to you is sooo wrong..somebody will get fired and should!

...wait, I'm confused, because that's indeed not what I said...

I don't use Giant Eagle "Advantage" Cards because I'm not comfortable with the idea of a large grocery store tracking what I buy on a week to week basis. Yes, that means I don't get the discounts, but it means I get to preserve my freedom, so that was worth a premium in my grocery bill. This hadn't ever been a problem in the past, until last night when I tried to buy tortillas and green chilies and was told that because I didn't have an advantage card I wouldn't be allowed to buy the items. I was offered the chance to use the store "courtesy card", but on principle alone didn't feel like I should have to. When I refused their "courtesy card" swipe, they told me there wasn't anything else they could do, and that I should feel free to put the items back on the shelves, to which I responded by dropping the items and walking out.
