Either would make a fine home defense gun. So would many guns. With the double barrel you have the advantage of two very sure, very potent shots. You have the disadvantage of only getting two shots.
With the AR you have the advantage of sustained firepower and the disadvantage of overpenetration. I think about this a lot since I have a child and since I have neighbors. The AR can be a finicky gun, too (I've been around the block so don't tell me they are the most dependable rifle ever made because they absolutely are far from it, though I'm not suggesting they are junk). The failure to function rate of an AR must be hundreds of times higher than a double barrel.
Personally, I keep a pump 12 ga next to my bed loaded with 2 3/4 inch 00 buck. I'd use #1 buck if I could find it since it would have less penetration, but still excellent effect at 5 yards.
