"An event unprecedented in human history is today" - Methane gas at record highs | |

It's not a joke. People don't seem to realize that a lot of shit going on in the oceans right now (mass die offs and bizarre animal behavior) are tied directly to the methane releases that are going on with increasing frequency. Not to mention the alarming rate in which the ice sheets are disintegrating and releasing methane into the atmosphere. And this is not something that is going to slow - we've reached a tipping point and it is just going to get worse until there's no one left to give a shit... |

When I first started studying climate change 9 years ago, I knew then that methane gas was going to be the biggest threat we would face if the ice melted....and it is... it's crazy watching this unfold. Just mind-blowing. |

This and Fuku should be EVERYWHERE. This is the real deal ELE and no-one gives a shit. So much for the DOOOOOOM fans. Either TPTB and media are too stupid to realise, or they know and aren't willing to give us a chance to do something. Most of the US seems to be anti-green issues, the Chinese are belching tons of waste and in Europe no one cares either. Stupid stupid stupid stupid humans. We are screwed. [link to www.ameg.me] |

In a perfect world what is the rational course of action here? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 36807475 Geo-engineering, although it has it's own possible hazards of it own, seems to be the only way we could stop it now. TPTB are not acting fast enough though, may take a massive movement like the Occupy movement to wake people up. These are the only things I can think of at this point. We could reduce our energy use now but that's not going to matter when tons of methane gas enter the atmosphere. |

It would be good to get people to take a look at this. There's nothing like a good visual to really tell the story. The Gulf spill was going to cause a huge die off, then Fukushima was going to kill millions, and now methane is the straw that breaks the camels back. I'm a little jaded when it comes to doom. |

Compared to the Earth's climate history? Guess what, it's been warmer than this before, and recently too. |

I live in Fairbanks. Minus 20 degrees last night, nothing is even starting to melt, except a little bit on sunny afternoons. If you doubt me, google Ice Alaska and check out the pictures of the ice sculptures, they have not even started to drip. And the Arctic Ocean is quite a ways north of here. The ice is NOT cracking because 'winter is over'. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25989455 I'm sorry, but we are at peak CO2 and peak methane. 50M tons of methane have been released by the Eastern Ice Shelf ALONE. With this added methane, and the loss of the ice to cool the planet, you will have a runaway heat feedback loop. The evidence is there (you can verify it with simple experiments). It does not matter whether you 'believe' or not. You can stand infront of a speeding train and 'believe' it wont kill you as much as like. Facts are facts.
