Now this is the news I really didn't want to hear. This and Fuku should be EVERYWHERE. This is the real deal ELE and no-one gives a shit. So much for the DOOOOOOM fans.

Either TPTB and media are too stupid to realise, or they know and aren't willing to give us a chance to do something.

Most of the US seems to be anti-green issues, the Chinese are belching tons of waste and in Europe no one cares either.

Stupid stupid stupid stupid humans. We are screwed.

Serious question OP. What are we supposed to do about this? In a perfect world what is the rational course of action here?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 36807475

Geo-engineering, although it has it's own possible hazards of it own, seems to be the only way we could stop it now. TPTB are not acting fast enough though, may take a massive movement like the Occupy movement to wake people up. These are the only things I can think of at this point. We could reduce our energy use now but that's not going to matter when tons of methane gas enter the atmosphere.

THERE IS ONLY ONE REASON WHY WE ARE HAVING TO DEAL WITH THIS HUMAN CATASTROPHE -

THE GREED AND SHORTSIGHTED IGNORANCE OF THE ELITE WHO DENIED TESLA AND EVERY OTHER GENIUS THAT FOLLOWED THE RIGHT TO PROCEED WITH CLEAN, FREE ENERGY - CARS THAT COULD GET 150 MPG BACK IN 1970 ETC ETC ETC -

NOT TO MENTION ALL THE BUILT IN OBSOLESENCE INTO BATTERIES ETC ETC...WE HAVE HAD TECHNOLOGY IN THE BOOKS OF HUMANITY FOR OVER 100 YEARS THAT COULD HAVE PREVENTED

ALLLLLL OF THIS!

BUT GREEDY - SHORTSIGHTED - SELFISH MEN HAVE PUT ALL OF HUMANITY AT RISK FOR THEIR OWN PROFITS! TO HELL WITH ANYONE ELSE, LET ALONE THE FUTURE OF LIFE ON THIS PLANET.

SHAME - THAT WE ALLOWED IT -AND CONTINUE TO ALLOW THEM TO CONTROL anything!

I heard on NPR today that they are now teaching climate change in schools. Carbon tax will be implemented in the next few years. That will be the last straw that destroys business.
 Quoting: Utter_Carnage

Just now teaching it in schools???

I was taught this junk back in 1991....in school!

They taught us that unless something was done about the climate back then that we ONLY had 10 years until we ran out of oxygen and died! LMAO

Let me guess...Some scientist is telling his students that in another 10 years we are DOOMED as well?
 Quoting: ZEROeffect

This is a classic straw man argument. You've falsely created an example of a ridiculous position someone might take (running out of oxygen in 10 years) as if its falsehood somehow negates an argument that we will see repercussions due to a tipping point. Drudge Report does this all the time in relation to "global warming" by over publicizing any incidence if usually cold weather, as if a one-off cold snap negates the entire argument of warming. It's really a debating tactic that either very disingenuous or ignorant people (or both) tend to adopt.

With all the northern icecap melted, potentially this summer, wouldn't that put the Earth in a somewhat unstable position as far as the tilt during rotation?

Like a top as long as its balanced it spins freely, when the balance is upset it starts to wobble and the rotation slows.

Could this conceivably happen to Earth?

Will the loss of billions of tons of ice in the Northern Hemisphere cause the Earth to eventually tilt and slow its rotation until the balance can be restored again??

The South poles are not melting like the Northern poles are.

Can you say "Pole Shift" !

[link to www.universetoday.com]

It seems to me that if the Earth was to make up for such a heavy South Pole and light North Pole that it would tilt up straight on its axis with the South Pole being at the very bottom of the planet, until a new north pole could form and re stabilize Earth. Which would drastically effect our seasons.

With China and India going at full pelt (not that I blame them but facts are facts), the West fully addicted to lifestyles that these two are emulating, it will take geo-engineering upon geo-engineering to forestall the inevitable. In the process this place will truly be a hell of our own making (and I am not inclined to be religious I might add but on this occasion, we could well end up in a nightmare of hellfire and brimstone proportions.)

It is amazing to see how optimistic or plain stupid a lot people can be. Faced with more evidence than i can point a stick at there are those who still choose to question or outright deny the fact that our civilzation is in trouble. I believe there is ample evidence to prove beyond any reasonable doubts that we are heading for a catastrophic failure of all our earthly ecologies. For any one to deny or even question that is just mind boggling. I mean we are not talking about people with no interest in the matter most seem to have some knowledge on the subject. I would understand if they had simply not been paying attention. But the mentality of those who refuse to see the current situation for what it is, well to put it simply they are part of the problem. There is no doubt in my mind we are doomed and living in the very last days of civilization as we know it. I try make the most of every given day but I can never shake that sadness in my heart knowing that it will all be over soon. May God have mercy on all our miserable souls.

""""The IPCC’s Summary for Policy Makers 2007 stated:‘The global atmospheric concentration of methane hasincreased from a pre-industrial value of about 715 ppb to 1732 ppb in the early 1990s, and is 1774 ppb in 2005. The atmospheric concentration of methane in 2005 exceeds by far the natural range of the last 650,000 years (320 to 790 ppb) as determined from ice cores. Growth rates have declined since the early 1990s, consistent with total emissions (sum of anthropogenic and natural sources) being nearly constant during this period. It is very likely that the observed increase in methane concentration is due to anthropogenic activities, predominantly agriculture and fossil fuel use, but relative contributions from different source types are not well determined.’[2]""""

What? That entire article stems from the above statement, which says growth rates have declined, not stopped or reversed and the statement actually acknowledges the increase in methane. Is this case against?

I think you are also missing the point that the arctic ice melt is the key contributing factor which is being discussed here, which is not mentioned.

Logic fail.

I'ld love to know which school that was as I have never come across this theory. We have always been told that our lifestyles were increasingly precarious but I have not heard a timelne being put on this apart from Lovelock (who was equally terrified by methane and gave a similar timeline as is this professor). The rest tend to be more cuationary rather than outright doom.

Denialists are strange. They will go to extreme lengths to debunk this issue. It's as if they would rather not hear and live in ignorance.

Methane is not THE greenhouse gas, steam is. Look it up. This past winter the Arctic had its fastest & most dramatic ice recovery from the summer melt in recorded history. Also, last winter in the Antarctic saw more sea ice than any time in the satellite era. Right now sea ice is about 1/2M square kilometers less than the 1979-present mean. It has recovered considerably since 2005. If you pay close enough attention, it's all frozen at the end of that video. Sea ice INCREASED in March by 166 sq. km., it didn't decline. Look it up here

Record Methane in Arctic early March 2013:

"Methane levels for this period are at record highs in the Barents and Norwegian Seas, i.e. the highest levels ever recorded by IASI, which is is short for Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer, a Fourier transform spectrometer on board the European EUMETSAT Metop satellite that has supplied data since 2007."
[link to arctic-news.blogspot.co.uk]

"This has the potential to release vast quantities of methane trapped by ice below the surface - billions of tonnes of methane. World-wide, peat bogs store at least two trillion tons of CO2. This is equivalent to a century of emissions from fossil fuels."

I read in a newspaper lately, that in Siberia people are making a living today, in digging out ancient ivory belonging to mammuts.

I remember thinking, that if this part of the world heats up releasing its methane, shit is around the corner.

Thanks for confirming this.
