The temperatures on this earth are always fluctuating, and the kind of life on this planet changes with it. Look how the continents are always on the move. It's just that we've never had so many people on this earth before (that we know of) and our communication technology is very good at this point. It's not the use of fossil fuels that's causing it, and it's not the devil either. |

toprance1 User ID: 36629246 United States 03/27/2013 02:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I heard on NPR today that they are now teaching climate change in schools. Carbon tax will be implemented in the next few years. That will be the last straw that destroys business. Quoting: Utter_Carnage Just now teaching it in schools??? I was taught this junk back in 1991....in school! They taught us that unless something was done about the climate back then that we ONLY had 10 years until we ran out of oxygen and died! LMAO Let me guess...Some scientist is telling his students that in another 10 years we are DOOMED as well? This is a classic straw man argument. You've falsely created an example of a ridiculous position someone might take (running out of oxygen in 10 years) as if its falsehood somehow negates an argument that we will see repercussions due to a tipping point. Drudge Report does this all the time in relation to "global warming" by over publicizing any incidence if usually cold weather, as if a one-off cold snap negates the entire argument of warming. It's really a debating tactic that either very disingenuous or ignorant people (or both) tend to adopt. I'ld love to know which school that was as I have never come across this theory. We have always been told that our lifestyles were increasingly precarious but I have not heard a timelne being put on this apart from Lovelock (who was equally terrified by methane and gave a similar timeline as is this professor). The rest tend to be more cuationary rather than outright doom. Denialists are strange. They will go to extreme lengths to debunk this issue. It's as if they would rather not hear and live in ignorance. Stranger still are people who swallow the environmentalist's agenda without question. There are a number of issues that need to be addressed. Why are some of the other planets warming as well? Why are humans blamed as the major factor in warming? How do you explain previous earth warming and cooling before the industrial revolution? Lastly, if in fact it is a normal earth cycle do you really think something can change it? Never ever, ever, ever give up!!! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 29818691 United States 03/27/2013 02:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Because methane is lighter than air the released methane rises and sits on top of the atmosphere. Because it reflects infrared it cools the earth. It goes to the equator due to earth's rotation and there is a bulge there. Thats where some planes have crashed. In the intertopical covergence zone. Planes can't fly in methane. The last one I looked at had sent an out of spec pitot tube reading before the crash as its last communication. Thats what you would expect for methane. Clear air turbulence may also be caused by it. Its why the Russian meteor exploded. It draws down the methane above the atmosphere and mixes it with air and detonates it. The Indonesian detonation was 50kT and created EMP that tookm some of the power grid down in Oz. Tunguska was estimated at 3 to 5 megaton. Rocks don't explode. Fuel-air mixtures do. Water vapor does not disolve in methane like air so its release can be accompanied by large clouds (so called mystery clouds). One spotted by pilots in the Pacific was estimated at 200 miles in diameter. |

In a perfect world what is the rational course of action here? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 36807475 Geo-engineering, although it has it's own possible hazards of it own, seems to be the only way we could stop it now. TPTB are not acting fast enough though, may take a massive movement like the Occupy movement to wake people up. These are the only things I can think of at this point. We could reduce our energy use now but that's not going to matter when tons of methane gas enter the atmosphere. I watched a TED talk today that gave me a little bit of hope: [link to www.ted.com] He makes the case that 2/3's of the earth is desertifying (if that's the right word), but that there IS A WAY of reversing it. problem with facing truth? worldclass problem IS geo-enginearing "The Most Important Topic For 2013": GeoEngineering.com [link to www.youtube.com] |

Is that the effect of global warming? Quoting: Felixtheslave Nope. It is the direct result of a shrinking atmosphere. ALL weather extremes we've seen recently are. Drought here, massive flooding there, huge snow storms etc. The atmosphere shrinks & expands with solar activity. We are in the solar "maximum" right now but it's an extremely weak maximum, that followed a very low minimum. Some astronomers are calling for a mini-Maunder, which was the cause of the last mini-ice age. |
